Thud.
The Demon Slayer crashed to the ground.
Roman Dmitry stood up and watched the Demon Slayer lying still on the floor.
Blood was everywhere on his body.
It was the Demon Slayer’s blood. Roman looked around and saw people staring in shock. Everyone around was still confused and scared. They had just seen terrible things.
People didn’t understand why the Demon Slayer had done such terrible violence or what his strange words meant. But they knew Roman Dmitry had come and stopped the threat.
People cheered loudly.
“Yes, you did it!”
“Thank you, Emperor Roman Dmitry!”
“You saved us!”
They were very happy and relieved that the danger was gone. No one felt sorry that the Demon Slayer was dead.
This made sense. The Demon Slayer had suddenly become crazy and killed people for no reason. No one felt sorry for him just because he had said some strange things before he died.
But Roman Dmitry didn’t smile or wave back. His face was cold and hard as ice. He just stared down at the Demon Slayer’s body on the ground, watching the blood spread.
This world was about survival, and Roman Dmitry had always been strong-minded. He never made exceptions. But now, looking at Kevin’s successor, for the first time, he felt unsure.
The words the Demon Slayer said, like he was pleading. They remained in Roman Dmitry’s mind.
He felt his heart waver, knowing that the other man was not the real Kevin, thinking of how hard Kevin’s life had been after he left. He really wanted to help him.
Not simply to show mercy, but to study Kevin’s successor and find out the connection about how the successor and Kevin were connected.
However, he stopped himself.
He pushed down his real feelings.
He knew what he had to do, even though it was painful, like cutting off a loved one for the greater good. He pushed his sword into the Demon Slayer’s body.
He knew it would be the same even if it was the real Kevin. Once he started killing innocent people for no reason, there was no reason to be kind to the Demon Slayer.
“This is what I have to do.”
He looked up. He saw the people cheering, and then he saw the members of the Guardian Corps who had died trying to stop the Demon Slayer.
He knew that if he was kind just because of his personal feelings, the Guardian Corps members who had died trying so hard to protect everyone would have died for nothing.
For Roman Dmitry, someone who trusted him was more important than many people he didn’t know. Kevin was very special to him. But Roman knew that even making one exception would weaken his rule and make people trust him less.
He was supposed to be like a wise and just king. He had to be firm. Even if his actions seemed very strict and sometimes harsh, he always had a clear reason, so people would trust him.
This situation was the same. The Demon Slayer looked just like Kevin. For a moment, it was hard for Roman to tell what was real.
Even though he felt very strong emotions, Roman Dmitry didn’t show any sign of being unsure. Being a ruler was a lonely path for him.
He knew that if he told his problems to his followers and looked unsure, they would see that their leader wasn’t perfect, even if they felt a little sorry for him for a moment.
He knew that even a small weakness could make people worried. When facing a strange and unbelievable situation, even a moment of showing he needed comfort would definitely cause trouble.
He walked over to Kang Min-ho. He calmly wiped the blood off his sword and asked, his face showing no emotion,
“Are you alright?”
“I am fine.”
Kang Min-ho replied. Roman said,
“Thank you. You helped stop a lot of damage. Take a break from your Guardian Corps work and get treatment. The security forces will collect the bodies and find out who died. We will have funerals for the innocent people who were killed, and we will remember the soldiers who died as heroes.”
The soldiers moved busily.
And with that, the situation was finished. Roman Dmitry left only after taking care of everything, leaving behind the people’s thankful looks.
Perfect. He was the one who always solved problems for the Dmitry Empire. People praised Roman Dmitry and thanked him.
However, Kang Min-ho just stared at Roman Dmitry’s back as he walked away. It looked very lonely, somehow.
* * * Later that day. Top officials had a meeting in Incheon.
Roman Dmitry wasn’t there. Kim Jun-hyuk led the discussion about what happened with the Demon Slayer.
Intelligence Director Park Ki-tae spoke. “As you know, Successors often go crazy and attack people. Research shows that Successors lose control when they get too many memories from other worlds at once. The Demon Slayer was the same. He said things that didn’t make sense for his life, and he kept saying ‘Emperor Dmitry.’ That’s a normal sign of going crazy.”
“Is there a way to stop Successors from going crazy before it happens?”
“No. Things like the System, Awakening, Successors, and Chosen Ones are beyond human power. We can study what humans have gone through and try to understand it, but we can only analyze it. There’s no way to fix the main problem.”
Kim Jun-hyuk looked very sad.
“This is a terrible world,” he said.
Many people had died. This happened even though they had careful plans to protect the capital. People said this kind of event was like a natural disaster, something you can’t stop.
We can’t just stop all Successors just because there’s a chance one might go crazy. Going crazy is very rare. And if we treat Successors, who help keep people safe, like criminals, it will cause big problems.
Like Park Ki-tae said, there was no way to stop it. They had no choice but to accept it and get used to it.
Park Ki-tae continued, “What’s important about this incident is what the Demon Slayer said. The Maron Church has always said that there’s a world called Dmitry and that Maron Dmitry, their emperor, would come. It looks like they were right, so the Maron Church has gained a lot of followers. But for 20 years, nothing they said came true, and people started saying they were lying and just using memories from a Successor to trick people. But this incident makes their claims seem more believable. The ‘evil spirit of Dmitry’ they talked about a long time ago seems to be real, and the Demon Slayer said ‘Emperor Dmitry’ when he was going crazy. If Emperor Maron Dmitry really exists like the Maron Church says, he might be strong enough to fix the problems humans have now.”
“If what the Maron Church says is true, it would be good for everyone. For now, let’s use the intelligence department to watch the Maron Church closely. If they talk about Maron Dmitry, they are sure to do something.”
“Understood,” someone replied. After that, they talked about other things.
Even though they were fixing problems one by one, people still didn’t look happy. Actually, everyone was curious.
Roman Dmitry… He had talked to the Demon Slayer. Everyone wanted to know what they talked about and where Roman Dmitry’s name came from, something they had always been curious about.
But no one asked about it. Roman Dmitry had suddenly appeared in the world and saved people who had only sadness and hopelessness left.
Roman Dmitry was alone, even in his own palace. He waited, silent, for the meeting to begin.
Kim Junhyuk spoke, “I will conclude the meeting here.”
The sun had sunk below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of fading orange and deep purple. Inside his room, only the pale glow of the moon filtered through the tall window, casting long, eerie shadows. Roman Dmitry held his sword, turning it slowly in the moonlight. Even in the dim light, the dark stain on the steel was clear – the blood of a demon, still clinging to the metal like a shadow itself.
Even after wiping off the blood, the dark red stain remained, stirring complex emotions within him. The demon was not Kevin. It was blind, unable to see him, and appeared like a doll repeating memories imprinted in his mind. Yet, the emotional turmoil was considerable.
When he pierced the abdomen of the being who cried out for His Majesty the Emperor, Roman Dmitry felt a shock unlike any he had experienced in previous killings.
‘What am I living for?’
A question he always repeated. The answer was dominion. He always had to exist above everyone else, and he willingly accepted the life of struggle to achieve dominion.
But is it still the same now?
Roman Dmitry could not say for sure.
When he lived as Baek Jung-hyuk, he struggled not to die and spent every night in anxiety, fearing when death would come. Perhaps that was why he could not stop the life of struggle even after gaining power.
He pushed himself hard to allow no element of unease, always yearning for strength and moving to higher stages. Roman Dmitry’s life was no different.
When he was born as the eldest son of Dmitry, he looked down at his weak body and once again accepted the life of struggle.
And now, Roman Dmitry knew that he had changed.
If he were the Baek Jung-hyuk of the past, he would have attacked any enemy country without hesitation, even if it wasn’t right.
But he didn’t. Even with the immense power that people in this world could not even imagine, he had taken his time, making sure people understood and agreed with his actions.
It had changed. It had transformed. Experiencing the life of his previous existence, a new desire unknowingly took root in Roman Dmitry’s heart.
He wanted to coexist. He did not want to exist alone in solitude, but rather hoped that people, led by him, would live human lives. He hoped that the desire to become stronger was not just for himself.
At first, he did not know his true feelings. He cherished people like Kevin, but he did not know he would miss the life he lived with them so much.
Losing those close to him showed him what was truly important. It became even clearer after returning from Salamander, a hidden place far away.
Now he knew that simply existing as a human was not enough. Good people. Only by being with them did life have true meaning.
It was not an empty shell with nothing inside, but rather the relationships formed between humans that constituted a truly human life. Because he wanted this kind of life, he decided not to become like a god, living forever alone.
He could fulfill the life that he could not fully satisfy as Baek Jung-hyuk as Roman Dmitry, and only after returning from Salamander did he realize how precious that life was.
He wanted to go back. Believing he could accept sacrifice was arrogance. He remembered the demon’s words, which sounded like Kevin crying out. He realized he should have been honest with people, like Kevin would have wanted.
He accepted it because he was used to handling things alone. At the time, he believed it was right. In fact, looking back now, the reason he accepted Kang Min-ho, whom he met for the first time, was because of the emptiness he felt after losing people he cared about.
He had to accept new people to fill the hole in his heart. Kang Min-ho, Kim Junhyuk, and as he got to know people in that way, Roman Dmitry alleviated his longing from his previous life, even if only a little.
He was lost in thought for a long time. The sun set, the sun rose, the sun set, the sun rose. He became honest with himself. He no longer ignored his true feelings.
When the sunlight shone through the window once more, Roman Dmitry accepted what he truly desired.
‘The 10 Great Disasters. I absolutely cannot wait that long.’
It became certain. He wanted to reunite with Dmitry as soon as possible. Even 1 minute, 1 second sooner. Even a little faster.
Roman Dmitry stood up, his power filling the room.
Once again, a meeting was convened. The leaders of the Great Han Empire were all present. It was the first time since the demon incident, so they showed signs of tension at Roman Dmitry’s appearance.
Something was different. They did not know exactly what it was, but it was certain that a special change had occurred in Roman Dmitry.
Roman Dmitry said, “I had a question while experiencing this situation. Why must we play in a game created by a powerful being who created this disaster? Even if they are divine beings, the powerful being must be dealt with in order for humanity to regain peace. And this situation proves a clear fact. There is a new world beyond different worlds. Numerous beings, including the successors of Dmitry, prove that dimensions are not limited to one. If so, the fact that the powerful being, who has not shown himself in this world, suddenly presented a disaster can be interpreted as meaning that they have crossed dimensions and only now arrived here.”
Little by little, he uttered intense words. Overwhelming the people, Roman Dmitry expressed the parts he had agonized over and concluded in the past few days.
“Humanity is trembling in anxiety after the Great Disaster. The 10 Great Disasters foretold by the powerful being. Humanity has not been able to enjoy complete peace for even a moment due to the Great Disasters that could break out anytime, anywhere. I ask you. Why must we wait for that time? Instead of accepting the 10 Great Disasters in order, if we find the powerful being that exists beyond the dimensions in the first place, humanity can solve the root cause of the problem.”
People were shocked. Roman Dmitry’s remarks were beyond common sense.
Until now, humanity has imagined the vague reality of perhaps facing the powerful being someday, due to his transcendent power. Victory could not be guaranteed. Because he showed abilities comparable to a god, they thought that even a faint hope would only be allowed if they possessed the most powerful force possible by then.
And now, Roman Dmitry shattered the realm of common sense.
“I will break down the boundaries of dimensions. And furthermore, I will directly find the existence of the powerful being and destroy him.”
A realm that no one could dare to imagine. People were in shock.
