The alley in Mexico City was narrow and dark, smelling of dust and something rotten. The sounds of the busy city were far away, but here, only the drip, drip of water echoed.
A man, who looked to be around thirty years old, ran as fast as he could. Sweat poured down his face, and his eyes darted around nervously. He looked truly desperate.
Chases were not unusual in this chaotic world. But this chase was different. People who knew the man’s name – Juan Carlos – would be very confused.
Juan Carlos was known as the hero of Mexico. He was incredibly powerful, someone people thought could beat anyone. That’s why it was so strange to see him running. He kept glancing over his shoulder, his breath coming in short gasps. He couldn’t hide how scared he was.
Juan Carlos cursed under his breath. It had all started a week ago, when Roman Dmitry made a shocking announcement to the world.
Roman Dmitry told everyone about the ‘Chosen Ones’ and the ‘Absolutes.’ He said the Chosen Ones were connected to powerful beings called Absolutes. And he said he would investigate all the Chosen Ones to find out the truth.
People were very confused and shocked. Recently, a terrible secret about the ‘Maron Order’ had been revealed. It was a big shock. Then, people learned that Roman Dmitry was actually Maron Dmitry, which made things even more uncertain. People didn’t know what to believe anymore.
Even worse, Roman Dmitry said some Chosen Ones were secretly working for the evil Absolutes. It was a huge mess. Nobody knew who to trust or what was really happening.
The world was trying to understand this new, scary situation. The Chosen Ones knew they were in trouble. Roman Dmitry was investigating them all. Juan Carlos had to decide what to do. He was afraid of being caught, so he decided to run and leave everything behind.
Juan Carlos thought, ‘If Roman Dmitry catches me, I’m dead.’
He remembered how Roman Dmitry had killed Headmaster Sebastian without hesitation. Roman Dmitry was not someone to be crossed. He was powerful and showed no mercy.
The truth was, Juan Carlos was not a real hero. People in Mexico cheered for him, thinking he always saved them. But secretly, he was making deals with the Absolute. He would cause problems, like monster attacks, so he could then ‘save’ everyone and look like a hero.
He would attract monsters to Mexico. Then, he would fight them and look like a hero. But it was all a show for the Absolute. The Absolute enjoyed watching Juan Carlos create chaos and then pretend to be a savior. It was like a cruel game to them.
The Absolute gave him his powerful ‘S-rank’ skills as a reward for being their ‘clown’ – someone who entertained them by playing this dangerous game.
Juan Carlos thought he was clever. He believed he had hidden all evidence of his bad actions. But he knew if Roman Dmitry found out the truth, he would surely kill him.
So, after thinking about it a lot, Juan Carlos decided to run. He had to escape to survive and maybe find a way to get his old life back.
People in Mexico used to cheer for Juan Carlos loudly and happily. Now, as he ran, he had to bow his head and try to hide if he passed anyone. It was difficult because he was so famous. Everyone knew his face.
He gasped for breath, ‘Haa, haa.’
A week of running had gone by. Juan Carlos was exhausted and fed up. He missed the cheers of the crowds. He was angry that he had to hide and run. He couldn’t stand it anymore.
Juan Carlos thought angrily, ‘Damn it! Being a hero was good! Anyway, it’s better for a few people to die than for the whole country to be weak. I was helping Mexico by getting rid of some people so I could save the rest. It’s not fair! I’m not a traitor like Roman Dmitry said. I was just helping the world by getting rid of the right people!’
His anger grew.
Juan Carlos knew he couldn’t keep running forever. He heard that the ‘Great Empire’ had sent a team to chase him. He was losing patience. He couldn’t run anymore.
Juan Carlos made a sudden decision. He would fight back. He stopped running suddenly. He spun around, his face hard and angry. He looked ready to fight.
There was a loud CLANG and a RUMBLE as he turned, maybe the sound of him using his power.
Juan Carlos shouted, ‘Okay, I’ll fight! I’ll show you I’m not weak! You won’t catch me easily!’
He decided he would not run anymore. He would fight and make everyone see that he was powerful and important.
But then, he heard a FLAP, FLAP sound. Someone was flying down towards him.
‘Well, well, well,’ a voice said. ‘Look who it is.’
Juan Carlos looked up and saw Kim Pan-seok flapping his wings in the air.
‘Oh, crap,’ Juan Carlos muttered.
He turned and ran as fast as he could again.
But not all Chosen Ones were bad like Juan Carlos. Some Chosen Ones who believed they were innocent went to see Roman Dmitry themselves and said they would be investigated.
One Chosen One said, ‘Yes, I am a Chosen One, and I get power from an Absolute. But I never did bad things for rewards. My Absolute was very cruel. When I was in trouble and couldn’t win, they offered me help. But I always used that help to protect people, to save humanity.’
Another Chosen One said, ‘I am innocent! I understand why Emperor Roman Dmitry is investigating us. If I were him, I would also suspect all Chosen Ones after what Andres did. But I want you to know, we are not all bad. I will help with the investigation to show you I am telling the truth. I am a good person, and I am honest.’
Even if they said they were innocent, Roman Dmitry couldn’t just believe them. The investigation took time. They needed to check if their stories were true or lies. They used information from all over the world to help them decide.
Roman Dmitry knew they couldn’t be 100% sure they were right. But this investigation was at least something to help keep people safe. By the end of the week, some Chosen Ones had been shown to be innocent.
And of course, there were cases like Juan Carlos.
Roman Dmitry’s voice was cold. ‘Juan Carlos,’ he said. ‘Just because you ran away doesn’t mean I automatically think you are a traitor. But we looked into some things that happened in Mexico. Your story doesn’t match what really happened. You lied to us. There’s only one reason for that – you are hiding something. Now, I am going to read your mind to find out the truth.’
‘Ah, no!’
‘Take him away.’
‘Aargh!’
Soldiers appeared and dragged Juan Carlos away.
This ‘mental interrogation’ was done by Kim Pan-seok. It was a very cruel way to get the truth. It caused terrible pain in the person’s mind, forcing them to tell everything.
Roman Dmitry made strict rules for using mental interrogation. He didn’t want to torture innocent people. It was only used for people like Juan Carlos who ran away, or people who lied during the investigation. And if there was strong evidence, like with Andres, that they were betraying the world, then they would also be subjected to mental interrogation.
Mental interrogation was cruel and inhumane. Some news companies criticized Roman Dmitry for using it. But Roman Dmitry didn’t care much about their criticism.
Roman Dmitry believed he had to do it. He knew that in normal times, human rights were important. But this was not a normal time. If they didn’t control the Chosen Ones who were betraying humanity, these enemies from inside could destroy everyone.
He had to make a strong, brave decision. In this world, normal rules didn’t work anymore. If humans just followed normal rules, the evil Absolutes would trick them and win.
So, the investigations continued in this way. Luckily, no innocent people were wrongly interrogated. Because mental interrogation was only used in clear cases like Juan Carlos, those people quickly confessed they were ‘villains,’ crying and confessing everything.
Just like Andres, they admitted they had betrayed humanity to help themselves. After hearing these confessions, people’s opinions changed. They no longer saw the Chosen Ones as heroes. Even if some Chosen Ones had done good things in the past, the fact that their power came from the evil ‘Absolute’ was a big problem.
A few days later, something happened that would shock everyone and change everything. It was an incident that started in Investigation Room 1-3.
That was where the incident occurred.
Julien of France was special. He was a ‘Chosen One’ with strong powers, like a top-level hero called an ‘A-rank Hunter’. He smirked at the investigators in front of him.
“Investigators, can I ask you something?”
Julien leaned forward, the old chair creaking as he moved it closer.
He stared at the investigator. He leaned in close, almost uncomfortably so.
“Imagine you were chosen by a powerful being, almost like a god, called an ‘Absolute Being’. Could you refuse what they asked? You were just a normal person with a sad life, and now you have powers like a top Hunter. Could you really say, ‘No, I have to protect humanity’?
“So, you chose to betray humanity,” the investigator said, his face becoming serious, his eyes narrowing as he stared at Julien.
Magical circles covered the floor. They were there to stop Julien if he tried to escape.
Outside, many soldiers waited, ready to help.
The investigator wasn’t scared by Julien’s reaction. He looked right at him without fear.
Julien chuckled, a cold sound that showed he thought this was all a joke.
Unlike the other Chosen Ones, he had come to the investigation willingly, for his own reasons.
“You are all hypocrites,” Julien said. “The Absolute Being is like a god in this world. If a god offers me gifts, why would I say no? Use your brains. Being chosen is too good to resist. From the moment I made my choice, my own life became more important than everyone else’s.”
“You…!”
There was no need to talk anymore.
Julien’s energy exploded.
“You think *these* can stop me?” Julien roared, pointing at the circles on the floor. “Pathetic!”
*Wham! Rumble!*
The magical circles flashed to life all at once, glowing blue. Hundreds of ropes of light shot up, trying to wrap around Julien. But it was no use. With a shout, Julien unleashed his power, and the magical ropes ripped apart like paper.
The investigators were ready for this. They hid as soon as the magic circles appeared. Soldiers rushed in to stop Julien.
A-rank was a low rank for a Chosen One.
But Julien was much stronger than people thought.
“Attack!”
“Stop him!”
Pop.
Tap tap tap tap tap.
He blocked all the attacks.
Bright energy exploded from Julien’s hands. He moved like lightning, grabbing the first soldier who ran at him and smashing his head against the desk with a sickening CRACK.
Thud!
Crack!
The soldier’s head burst open.
Julien’s face was covered in blood. He began to kill all the soldiers who attacked him.
Some of them were skilled fighters who were supposed to protect the investigators.
They were much stronger than an A-rank Hunter should be able to handle. But Julien killed them all easily.
This was happening in the heart of the Great Han Empire, a very powerful empire in the world.
Julien showed his evil intentions. After killing everyone, he went back to his chair and sat down.
It was a scary sight.
Dust and broken pieces of stone filled the air. The room was a mess, with cracks in the walls and furniture smashed to bits. The ceiling was gone, leaving a hole that showed the blue sky.
Only one person, the investigator, was still alive.
Julien looked at the investigator, who was now pale and trembling, his eyes wide with fear.
“Bring Roman Dmitry here now,” Julien said. “The Absolute Being who chose me wants to meet him, not me.”
* * *
“Hmm~”
Julien hummed a tune.
He leaned back in his chair and tapped his foot. He seemed as relaxed as if he were at home.
Julien could have escaped easily. The hole in the ceiling was right there, and he was fast. But he didn’t move. He stayed in the interrogation room, waiting for Roman Dmitry.
He looked at the terrified investigator and made another request.
“Also, don’t bring anyone here except Roman Dmitry. I want to talk to him alone. If you try anything, I promise I will kill you, no matter what it takes.”
About ten minutes passed.
Julien looked around.
The interrogation room was destroyed.
But the magical defenses were strong. Only the ceiling was gone. The interrogation room was mostly still there.
Dead bodies were everywhere. The door was barely hanging on. Magic had come a long way.
The Great Han Empire was making fast progress, and even the Absolute Being who chose him was impressed.
The Absolute Beings had a plan for humanity to develop slowly. But Roman Dmitry was making things happen too fast for their plan to work.
“Tsk tsk, he’s rushing to his own end. People say Roman Dmitry will save the world, but I think he will destroy it.”
Julien didn’t care what happened to the world.
He was a Chosen One.
He had sided with the Absolute Being because the Absolute Being was the one who brought disaster to humanity.
It was like Andres.
There was almost no chance of winning against the Absolute Being. So, he chose to survive by pleasing the Absolute Being.
That was why he wanted to meet Roman Dmitry. The Absolute Being had given Julien a task. To complete it, he had to meet Roman Dmitry.
He wasn’t worried.
It didn’t matter if Roman Dmitry was strong or not.
The Absolute Being was directly helping with this task.
Then,
Creak.
Thud.
The broken door fell to the floor.
A man walked in.
“Huh? I told you not to bring anyone except Roman Dmitry.”
“Oh, really? Well, listen to me.”
Thud thud.
He stepped inside.
The man was Kim Pan-seok.
He stopped in front of Julien and looked down at him coldly.
“Whether you’re an Absolute Being or whatever, does the Emperor come just because you ask?”
He spat out the words.
It was a surprise, and not what Julien expected.
