On the first day Jacob allowed Roman to work, the miners showed they were not happy when they heard the news.
“Is Dmitry’s young master really going to work in the iron mine?”
“Roman Dmitry? Why would he do that?”
“I don’t know why. But I bet he’ll just pretend to work for a bit and then quit.”
No one thought it was a good idea.
This was not surprising.
If Roman wasn’t going to work like everyone else, his presence would make things awkward.
He wasn’t just anyone; he was the eldest son of the Dmitry family.
How could the miners work comfortably knowing he was the family’s heir?
Because it was so obvious what would happen, the miners complained.
Morkan, a miner who had worked there for many years, was especially upset.
“Lord Dmitry is losing his touch,” Morkan said. “It’s good to teach his son to take over the family business, but he should have done it earlier. He’s always cared more about the blacksmiths and ignored us miners. Dmitry’s three heirs learn how to work with iron at the smithy from a young age, but they never learn how to work in the iron mine. That shows that Lord Dmitry treats us unfairly.”
“Isn’t that a bit of an exaggeration?” someone asked.
“Exaggeration?” Morkan replied. “Dmitry is important because of the iron mine, but the smithy gets all the praise, doesn’t it?”
Morkan had been holding in his feelings for a long time.
Dmitry was known as the city of mining. Miners were very important there. But people only praised the blacksmiths who worked with the iron.
Of course, Baron Romero had provided a good place for the miners to work. But he seemed to favor the heirs learning blacksmithing more.
The iron mine and the smithy were both important to Dmitry. But only sending the heirs to the smithy made Morkan unhappy.
“Roman Dmitry may have been forced to come here, but I don’t plan to treat him well just because he’s Dmitry’s young master,” Morkan said. “Remember this, everyone. We are valued by how we work. So, instead of just bowing to him, let’s show Roman Dmitry how hard the work in the iron mine is. That way, the people in charge will hear us.”
“Understood.”
“Morkan is right. Let’s show Dmitry’s young master what’s what.”
Hendrick was right about the miners.
The miners were stubborn and didn’t welcome Roman.
Early in the morning, Roman put on his work clothes and went to the iron mine.
No one welcomed him.
Everyone was busy yawning because they were tired. They pulled on their hard hats with tired faces as they lined up.
This was normal at the iron mine.
After a quick warm-up, the men listened to Jacob, the master of the iron mine.
“Always remember, safety is the most important thing in the iron mine,” Jacob said. “We work hard to earn money and come to this iron mine every day. I will make sure you are safe so you can go home without getting hurt. Please follow the rules.”
“Yes, sir!”
“Understood!”
After the morning meeting, the miners got to work.
Roman thought he would be mining iron ore with the others. But Jacob called him aside and said,
“Young master, please help the transport team carry soil and iron ore. This isn’t a special favor. We can’t trust a beginner like you to mine ore, Roman. So, please help with the easy jobs that require strength. If you work too hard and get hurt because you’re worried about what others think, we’ll be in trouble too. So please, work safely and carefully.”
Jacob wasn’t happy about Roman being there either.
He had agreed to let him work because he had been asked so many times. But he was still worried as he spoke.
Roman listened to the order.
He was just a beginner there, like Jacob said.
Roman followed the others down the mine shaft for a long time until they reached their work area.
“Alright, let’s go, let’s go.”
“We need to work hard to meet our goal.”
The senior workers started filling the cart with soil and iron ore.
Roman quietly helped them.
He went to them and moved the soil and iron ore with them. When the cart was full, he pulled it out.
From then on, he kept doing the same simple tasks.
At first, some people felt awkward working with Roman. But when Roman worked hard, they quickly focused on their own jobs.
‘The system is very well-organized,’ Roman thought.
The city of mining deserved its name.
People quickly moved the endless amounts of soil and iron ore. Some people filled the carts, and others moved them.
Outside, they organized what was brought in and moved it to another place.
The work was clearly divided. Roman looked at the mine shafts during breaks and saw that safety seemed good.
Steel and wooden supports were everywhere to prevent the mine from collapsing. There were rails on the floor to pull the carts.
Dmitry’s history had been built up layer by layer over many years.
Even while working, Roman carefully remembered what he saw and heard.
‘I need to understand this place where I live for my future plans,’ he thought. ‘I need to know how the people of Dmitry live, how much power Dmitry has, and what I can do here. Experiencing Dmitry’s daily life will definitely help me.’
Experiencing daily life was Roman’s way of doing things.
Others might not understand why he did such things, but Roman believed it was necessary.
He couldn’t learn much on the first day.
He worked up a sweat, the sun went down, and the day at the iron mine ended.
On the third day, Roman learned about iron ore from a miner.
“Dmitry’s ironware is popular because it is well-made in the smithy,” the miner said. “But the iron ore itself is also top-quality. The people of the Cairo Kingdom know that Dmitry’s ironware is valuable because of this. Dmitry doesn’t sell the iron ore itself. All the iron ore from the iron mine is processed and sold directly by Dmitry. Usually, a lot of money is lost when iron ore is sold. But Dmitry mines and processes the iron ore themselves, so they make a lot of profit. That’s why people call your family rich.”
The miner sounded proud as he explained.
Roman already knew this.
But hearing it from a miner who worked in the field made him think that Dmitry might be even richer than he thought.
‘They handle getting and selling materials themselves,’ he thought. ‘The top-quality iron ore and Dmitry’s blacksmiths make Dmitry’s ironware more valuable than others. That’s how they’ve made money for decades. Dmitry’s wealth may be greater than I expected. But Dmitry’s wealth is not mine. I can only get so much money as the eldest son of the family. So, I have to find something I can do for this place.’
It was like his previous life.
Baek Joong-hyuk used his status as the heir of the Demonic Cult to gain power and become the Heavenly Demon.
It was the same now.
Instead of waiting for the family to give him money, he was going to find things he could get himself.
That’s why he visited the iron mine.
Dmitry’s daily life would give Roman ideas. With the results he got, Roman was going to create his own ‘power’.
Something separate from the family.
Even though it came from the family, it was foolish to struggle alone when he had such a great background.
He had many questions.
How much iron ore is there?
How much do they produce each day?
Roman was about to ask the miner more questions, but Morkan walked by and looked unhappy.
“Young master, this is not a place to chat,” Morkan said. “If you’re going to work, work. If you’re not going to work, don’t bother others and leave. We have to work hard to meet our daily goal.”
The miner who was talking to Roman left with an awkward look on his face.
Morkan thought Roman would get angry. He glared at Roman as if he wouldn’t back down.
But Roman said, “I’m sorry. I’ll focus on my work,” and stepped back.
Morkan was surprised by Roman’s reaction.
He watched Roman focus on his work again and couldn’t take his eyes off him for a while.
A week had passed since he started working.
He sweated every day.
Roman worked with Dmitry’s miners. He saw and heard many things.
But it still wasn’t enough.
He could solve the problem by talking to other miners, but no one wanted to talk to him.
‘Is this their territory?’ Roman wondered.
From the first day, Roman knew that he was being ignored.
The miners tried to stay away from Roman on purpose. Even if they had a few conversations, people around them interrupted, like Morkan did.
He didn’t care if it was their territory or if there was another reason.
Even if it was their territory, he didn’t think it was right to ignore Dmitry’s heir in Dmitry’s land. He didn’t think talking would solve the problem.
So, he put up with it.
Since he was the one who came in to work first, Roman decided to cooperate with the work instead of acting like the heir.
“It’s lunchtime!” someone shouted. “Everyone, come outside!”
The break was on time.
Baron Romero came from a common background. He understood the workers’ difficulties and made sure they had breaks and quitting time.
At the sound of the break, people stopped working and went outside.
Roman did the same.
Instead of eating the fancy food he ate at home, he sat down on the dirt floor and ate dry bread and soup.
At first, everyone looked at him in surprise.
Even though the food was not very good for a noble young master, Roman ate it all without complaining.
‘This is enough,’ he thought.
In his previous life, Roman had been in even worse situations.
The Demonic Cult’s training included a trial where he had to survive for a month without food. He ate everything he could find, including bugs and snakes.
Bread and soup were much better than that.
Roman ate the food quickly, and soon the soup was gone.
Just as he was about to finish eating, someone sat down in front of him.
It was Morkan.
Morkan had been looking at Roman with disapproval for a week. Now, he asked Roman a personal question for the first time.
“I see that you are sincere, young master,” Morkan said. “But why are you working here?”
Morkan had to admit that Roman was different than he had thought.
