In Washington, D.C., President John Harrison and other important American leaders came together. They were there to hear the last message from Roman Dmitry.
[After all the dark clouds of disaster have passed, we will surely face a new future.]
The communication ended.
After the message ended, President Harrison looked very serious and spoke.
“This is it. The moment we’ve been waiting for, the moment we’ve suffered for. If we trust Emperor Roman Dmitry and fight with all we have, we, no, all of humanity will live……”
Bang!
“Mr. President, we have a problem!”
His words were cut short.
All eyes turned to him.
The U.S. military officer might have been embarrassed normally, but this was no time to worry about such things.
“President, you must come outside now! A ‘Gate’ is opening right here, in the middle of the city!”
“Oh no,” someone whispered.
“It’s starting.”
Everyone’s faces showed fear and worry.
They had made plans, but they didn’t think the disaster would start so quickly, just 49 days after the time in Korea.
President Harrison quickly led everyone outside.
The government building was on a hill. When they stepped out, they saw the sky. It was blue just moments ago, but now, dark clouds filled it.
Then, a deep rumbling sound.
A huge creature slowly flew down from the clouds.
It had skin as black as the storm clouds, wings like a bat made of thin skin, and red eyes that glowed.
It was an S-rank monster, a Black Dragon.
Even though it was only one Black Dragon at first, President Harrison reacted fast.
“Tell all soldiers to fight with everything they have! Destroy that Black Dragon! We will show those arrogant Absolutes that the United States will never be defeated by just one monster!”
He stopped, his eyes wide.
“Wh-what is that!”
His eyes grew even wider. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing, even before he finished speaking.
A growling sound.
A screech!
Looking past the first dragon, they saw more. Not just one.
Dozens of Black Dragons were coming from beyond the clouds, one after another.
President Harrison felt his legs become weak.
Just two or three monsters like this could destroy most countries. But the number of Black Dragons in front of him was something no one had ever seen.
Then he understood.
This disaster.
This fight for humanity’s future was going to be incredibly hard.
The appearance of the Black Dragons was not just a problem for the United States.
Exactly 49 days later, the same thing happened all over the world.
In China, the Murim warriors looked up. Their eyes were filled with horror.
“Stop them!” someone shouted.
“Bloody hell!” another cried.
You should be able to see a normal creature easily. But this monster was huge, almost 10 meters tall. It was so big it filled their entire view, and they still couldn’t see all of it.
An S-rank monster, a Cyclops.
The Murim warriors attacked. Blood splashed on the monster’s thick skin, and explosions went off. But the Cyclops didn’t even seem to notice. It just swung its huge club, which was as big as its own body.
WHAM!
CRACK! CRUNCH!
The club smashed down.
People were thrown into the air.
Even warriors whose bodies were strengthened by magic were crushed. And just like in the United States, there wasn’t just one or two Cyclops.
Dozens of Cyclops.
They were destroying everything in Beijing.
It looked like the monsters would kill everyone. Then, Wang Wiryong, the leader of the Murim, stepped forward.
“Dmitry won’t be ready to help for four more hours. We can’t ask Emperor Roman Dmitry for help right away, not at the very start of this disaster. We have to destroy these monsters ourselves!”
“For our people!” someone shouted.
“For our people!” others repeated.
Wang Wiryong drew his sword with a *swoosh* sound.
He knew many would die. But he had to fight. He had to move forward.
Cyclops were everywhere, surrounding them. Wang Wiryong and the Murim warriors risked their lives and charged into the monsters.
Compared to other countries, the United States and China were in a slightly better situation.
They had strong armies and were fighting back against the monsters. But for countries like Australia, it was different.
Monsters with snake heads. Huge bodies. Hydras showed their sharp teeth to the Australian soldiers.
A screech!
A crackling sound!
Powerful magic exploded, hitting the soldiers.
Australia could maybe fight three or four monsters like this if they used everything they had. But there were dozens of Hydras.
People were dying all around. They had been excited and hopeful after Roman Dmitry’s message. But now, facing these monsters, they were being killed easily.
Watching this terrible scene, a high-ranking officer shouted.
“A-at this rate, Canberra will fall soon! Should we ask the Dae Empire for help? We can’t even last an hour against these monsters, let alone four!”
It was a hopeless situation.
But the Prime Minister of Australia had a different idea.
He knew it was terrible, but he also knew this wasn’t just Australia’s problem.
“We trained for ‘impossible situations’ like this. If we can’t even hold on for one hour without asking the Dae Empire for help, then the Dae Empire will be overwhelmed with requests from every country! We have to hold on, no matter what. We will hold on and on, and buy time with our lives.”
“……Understood,” the officer said, gritting his teeth.
Because of Roman Dmitry’s training, the Australian soldiers didn’t give up or drop their weapons, even though it looked hopeless.
Hadn’t they seen it with the Kang Minho problem? If they just held on, even if they died, Roman Dmitry would come and fix everything with the time they bought.
They wanted to believe. No, they *had* to believe.
The reason countries like Australia were trying not to ask for help, even though they desperately wanted to, was because of news they had heard earlier.
[An Absolute has appeared in the Dae Empire.]
An Absolute had appeared. The real enemy wasn’t just the monsters.
Roman Dmitry had to fight this powerful enemy. The Prime Minister of Australia’s face showed anger and worry.
Now was the time to hold on, just like they planned.
He prayed hard.
He prayed that Roman Dmitry would win.
He prayed that Dmitry would not lose to the Absolute.
Meanwhile, in the Dae Empire, things were different.
While the rest of the world was being attacked by many S-rank monsters, only one creature appeared in the Dae Empire.
CRACK!
Space cracked open. It looked like space itself was being crushed and ripped apart. Then, a gray creature came out from the darkness, from a place where nothing should exist.
People stared. They had never seen anything like it. The creature was strange.
The creature was grey and moved in a strange way. He walked on air, like steps were there when they were not. He came down slowly to the ground.
He touched the ground, as if checking it was good enough for him. Then, he looked around at everyone. His eyes showed he thought he was better than them all.
“So many of you weak humans are here. Trying to stay alive, are you?”
His name was Kargas.
Kargas was getting ready for the Great Cataclysm in 49 days, and he had an idea to share with his friends.
“It’s funny, isn’t it? Roman Dmitry thinks he is so good because he beat one of us. But when the big disaster comes, I will fight Roman Dmitry myself. I will destroy him. People think he is your hope? I will show you he is nothing!”
This made things interesting.
Everyone was watching him.
Volpir begged him to be careful until the very end.
He warned Kargas that Roman Dmitry was not an easy person to beat, but Kargas believed in himself.
The Absolutes had lived for a very long time.
They had met many different creatures and made them feel hopeless, but they had never met anyone who could really hurt them.
No one had even come close.
They had always easily beaten their enemies, so they were sure that Roman Dmitry would be the same.
“Roman Dmitry, you are just a weak human, but you dared to be against us. Because of that, people will remember you for a long time. So, I will let you fight *me*. Come forward! If you really think you can beat me, stop talking and show yourself!”
CRACK.
BOOM!
Magic filled the air.
Kargas was excited.
What if Roman Dmitry really did come to fight?
He would tear him apart.
He would show everyone that he was better, and the humans would be terrified and lose all hope.
But what if he ran away and didn’t show up?
That would be interesting too, in a different way.
It would show how weak humans really were.
Some of the Absolutes, including Kargas, were watching, sure that Roman Dmitry would not come.
It’s easy to talk big, but it’s harder to act. They might say they can beat Absolutes or gods, but fighting someone who can make natural disasters with their hands is impossible for a human.
He looked down at the people.
Even though they were in the same place, Kargas didn’t think of humans as his equals.
Suddenly, a voice rang out. “I accept.”
People turned.
Pushing through the crowd, Roman Dmitry walked forward.
Kargas smiled widely. “Yes! Finally!” He thought.
Seeing Roman Dmitry in front of him was so funny to Kargas. He almost laughed out loud.
What was this person? What was Roman Dmitry thinking?
After he had cruelly torn him apart, he wanted to keep Roman Dmitry’s brain and see what was inside.
One thing was sure: this was going to be interesting.
The Absolutes had always wanted something like this to happen. Now that a human was really standing in front of them, ready to fight, they couldn’t help but laugh.
[Look, he will really fight!]
[Kargas, destroy that human who thinks he is so great!]
[This is amazing! A human dares to fight us!]
He could hear his friends talking from far away.
Kargas’s body floated up.
He rose higher and higher, going against gravity. He looked down at Roman Dmitry and pointed a finger.
“Then try to stay alive.”
A bright flash! Everything shook.
Kargas used his power. It was huge and destructive, all aimed at Roman Dmitry.
CRACK! BOOM! The ground split open.
It was like an earthquake.
The earth fell away under Roman Dmitry’s feet. Then, water rushed up from the cracks like a giant wave! But there was no sea here. It was magic, not nature.
At the same time, someone cried out, “Please, don’t die!”
FLASH! BOOM! Lightning crashed from the sky.
The world turned white for a moment. Then, so many lightning bolts, like angry snakes of light, came down on Roman Dmitry.
BANG! BOOM! It was like a storm, but made by one creature.
Kargas’s power came from nature itself. There was no way a weak human body could survive nature’s power.
That’s what Kargas and the other Absolutes thought.
They had destroyed so many creatures with just a wave of their hand. They thought Roman Dmitry would be destroyed too.
But then… FLASH! CRACK! Magic energy spun around Roman Dmitry.
Kargas’s powerful magic should have destroyed him. But Roman Dmitry lifted his sword. With one swing, he cut through the storm of power!
“Is that all you’ve got?” Roman Dmitry said, his voice calm.
The lightning got weaker because of Roman Dmitry’s magic. The wave of water crashed into something strong and broke apart. The shaking ground stopped moving wherever Roman Dmitry stood. It was like he was stronger than nature itself.
At first, Roman Dmitry let Kargas attack. But after seeing the attacks, Roman Dmitry started to wonder. ‘Is that all?’ he thought.
Kargas’s power was not as strong as he expected.
Maybe… maybe these Absolutes are not so strong after all. They can do amazing things, like make storms with their hands. But maybe they are not as powerful as everyone thinks.
They had destroyed other worlds by breaking their borders.
The Demon World had almost been destroyed that way too. But the Demon King that Roman Dmitry fought had not talked about how strong the Absolutes were.
This was the first time the Absolutes had come to fight living creatures in person.
If their power had not been proven, if they were just making arrogant claims based on that one attack.
“I thought you would be stronger,” Roman Dmitry said. That was what he now believed.
