“I’ve heard that story several times this past month. I’ve been putting off calling Mrs. Wide because you said your clothes won’t fit if you gain weight. Are you telling me to postpone it again?”
“I’m not saying postpone it, but just a little bit…”
“No. I can’t stand seeing you wear clothes that don’t fit anymore. We can always make new clothes when these get too small, so listen to me today.”
Rosette looked surprised, and Isabel frowned.
“Don’t make that face like you’re worried about clothing expenses.”
Rosette felt that any further argument would provoke Isabel’s anger, so she replied timidly instead of protesting further.
“Yes.”
“Okay, now that’s settled, let’s take measurements.”
Isabel clapped once, and the staff rushed at Rosette with measuring tapes.
Rosette only repeated, ‘Sister? Sister?’ before being led behind the screen by the staff.
Mrs. Wide watched Isabel drink her tea and smiled softly.
“The little Princess is really…”
Before she could finish her sentence, Isabel interrupted.
“Cute, isn’t she?”
Her voice was as dry as someone making a commonplace remark like, ‘The weather is nice today, isn’t it?’ However, Mrs. Wide, who had known Isabel since she was young, noticed that she was completely smitten with her younger sister.
‘The little Princess is one thing, but Princess Isabel is also very cute,’ Mrs. Wide thought.
However, Isabel disliked being treated like a child. After losing her mother at a young age, Isabel had to take charge of the Adrian household, so she matured early and wanted to become an adult quickly.
Even though she was still at an age where she should be receiving plenty of love.
But Mrs. Wide skillfully hid her thoughts.
“Yes, she is cute.”
“So, please take good care of her.”
“Yes, the dress will be perfect…”
“No, not that.”
“Ah.”
Mrs. Wide quickly understood her true meaning this time as well.
“Yes. I will make sure to mention how cute and lovely she is.”
The salon was a place where all sorts of rumors came and went.
The current focus of society was on the lucky second Princess of the Adrian family, Rosette Adrian.
However, thanks to Duke Adrian’s strict control over his employees, no rumors about Rosette had spread at all.
But the more that happens, the more people become interested.
Over the past month, Mrs. Wide had been asked most frequently about whether she had seen the new Adrian Princess.
So, Isabel meant to keep a tight lid on things so that no bad rumors about her sister would spread.
“The Princess really cherishes the little Princess.”
Isabel scoffed.
“Cherish? I just don’t want any unnecessary talk about our Adrian family.”
But, contrary to her words, a smile touched Isabel’s face as she looked beyond the screen.
When she first saw Rosette, Isabel was worried.
She wasn’t against having a younger sister, but she was concerned about whether the seemingly innocent Rosette could survive in this cutthroat high society.
‘-Then you can sponsor her.’
That’s why she said such a thing. Because the title of a genius under the patronage of the Adrian family would attract attention while allowing her to live a smooth life, rather than being an adopted commoner.
However, Rosette’s adoption was decided. Although she didn’t want to admit it, Isabel had fallen completely in love with her new sister in just one month.
‘I have to protect her,’ Isabel thought.
Daniel and Lucas are men, so they don’t know how scary high society can be. It was a place where you could be torn to shreds for even the smallest flaw.
Even Isabel had people gossiping behind her back for learning swordsmanship.
So, she knew without even looking what kind of things Rosette would hear in high society.
“Make sure to say that the Adrian family cherishes Rosette.”
“Yes, Princess.”
‘Don’t ever forget that Adrian is behind Rosette.’ It was a warning in that sense.
Mrs. Wide smiled again as she watched Isabel sip her tea.
‘You’re still not honest,’ she mused.
* * *
Mrs. Wide sent the pajamas first. The new pajamas were as soft as Isabel’s pajamas that she had been wearing for the past month, but they weren’t too big and fit her perfectly.
Rosette changed into her pajamas and walked back and forth in front of the mirror, examining herself and stroking the soft fabric with her fingertips.
Joan, who had become Rosette’s personal maid, smiled as she watched her.
“You should go to sleep soon.”
“Okay.”
She wanted to show off her new pajamas to her family, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. Rosette put her disappointment aside and lay down on the bed.
Was it thanks to the new pajamas? She was able to fall into a deep sleep quickly.
“Hey, kid!”
A few hours later, it was Lucas Adrian’s voice that woke Rosette up.
“Hey, kid!”
When Rosette, who had a good dream last night, didn’t wake up, Lucas jumped onto the bed. The soft bed sank for a moment before rising again.
“Hey, brat.”
“……”
“Youngest.”
“Ugh.”
Rosette wriggled and went under the blanket. Lucas grinned as he looked at his younger sister.
‘Cute,’ he thought.
About a month ago, his father, Duke Adrian, and his brother, Daniel Adrian, left the mansion to deliver supplies to the orphanage they always sponsored.
The two, who usually came in the evening if they left in the morning, did not return for several days, saying they had urgent business.
Then, the butler, Sebastian, said something unexpected.
-The master will be adopting a young lady. She will be coming with him today.
-A young lady? Adoption?
-Yes. The young master will have a younger sister.
A younger sister?
It was really sudden news, but Lucas was happy. He had always wanted a younger sibling, having only older brothers and sisters. And now he was getting one! How could he not be happy!
And after a few days, his father and brother, who had returned, brought a really small and lovely girl.
The child’s overall coloring was light. Her hair was cotton candy pink, and her eyes were sky blue, resembling the spring sky.
And what about her skin? It was so white that it seemed like she had never seen the sunlight in her life. It was quite a contrast to the Adrian family members, whose skin was nicely tanned from swordsmanship training under the scorching sun.
She was short and skinny, probably because she didn’t eat well, but she looked like a doll if she was dressed up well.
That was Rosette Adrian, who was sleeping in front of him now.
‘How could such a pretty child become my sister?’ Lucas wondered.
In fact, Lucas wanted a younger sibling to play with.
However, Rosette was weak and shy. She wasn’t a good sibling to play with.
Lucas was still happy. ‘So what if she’s physically weak? We can build it up from now on!’
He looked at the doll-like Rosette and opened his mouth again.
“Wake up, wake up!”
Only then did Rosette rub her eyes and open them. Then, he saw her sky-blue eyes, as pretty as marbles.
Lucas grinned and shouted.
“We have to go for early morning practice!”
* * *
When she received the wooden sword [a practice sword] he used from Lucas, Rosette clearly promised to learn swordsmanship. It seemed like she had to learn basic swordsmanship as a member of the Adrian family.
However, due to realistic physical limitations, she gradually delayed learning swordsmanship.
And today, she was finally going to learn swordsmanship. Rosette didn’t show it, but she was a little excited.
However, it wasn’t long before she regretted her actions.
“Okay, we need to build up your basic stamina first. Run three laps around the training ground!”
Lucas, who came early in the morning, took her to the training ground, even though she couldn’t open her eyes properly. The reason was that she had to do her early morning practice as promised.
To make matters worse, he volunteered to be Rosette’s swordsmanship teacher.
“What are you doing?”
“Ugh.”
Rosette, who was wearing Isabel’s training clothes, started walking around the training ground at Lucas’s urging. In an instant, the eyes of the knights in the training ground turned to her.
They started whispering.
“Is that her…?”
“I heard she doesn’t learn swordsmanship…”
“Isn’t she too young to learn swordsmanship yet?”
The knights looked at Rosette, who was walking with her arms vigorously swinging back and forth, with a loving gaze, even though they were puzzled.
The people of the Adrian family were born to do swordsmanship. They were much larger than their peers and had good stamina.
The Adrian siblings, except for Rosette, were the same. They ran around the training ground bravely when they first learned swordsmanship.
Isabel, who was a girl, was the same. She boasted stamina comparable to that of an average adult and quickly developed her swordsmanship skills.
Usually, the young lady they served was someone to protect, but Isabel was the opposite: a superior to be loyal to and follow.
Maybe that’s why the knights quickly fell in love with Rosette, the youngest young lady, who they felt they had to protect.
However, it seemed that Lucas couldn’t see Rosette’s cuteness. He followed his sister closely, urging her on.
“Hey, slow, slow. Is that walking or running? Increase your speed.”
‘No, young master! The youngest young lady is different from Isabel! How can she run with those legs!’ the knights thought.
The knights were restless and wondered if they should volunteer to run instead.
However, Rosette, who received all their worries, did not act spoiled. Rather, she gritted her teeth and increased her speed. Even so, it was only a speed from walking slowly to walking quickly.
As she was walking like that, Rosette tripped and fell.
“Heok!”
A gasp escaped from the knights. They worried that the little young lady would burst into tears.
Lucas, who had sternly urged her on, was also surprised and picked up Rosette.
“Hey, are you okay?”
He looked at Rosette’s knees and sat down in front of her, showing her his back.
“Kid, get on my back.”
“…?”
“We have to go to the doctor. Get on my back quickly.”
The knights were horrified and ran over.
“We’ll do it!”
“Please leave the young lady to me!”
Lucas glared at the knights fiercely. He didn’t say anything, but his eyes seemed to say, ‘How dare you touch my sister?’
Lucas, who usually followed the knights’ lead, was now glaring at them with quite sharp eyes. As the knights flinched and hesitated without realizing it, Lucas said again.
“Now, get on.”
“I’m okay.”
“Don’t cry and get on.”
“I’m not crying.”
Rosette was really okay and didn’t cry. Her knees were a little sore, but this was nothing compared to being beaten by Duke Dallas in the past.
“I can keep going.”
She brushed the sand off her knees and started running around the training ground again.
Lucas looked at her with a dumbfounded expression, and the knights whispered that the youngest princess was brave.
She ran three laps around the training ground with the silent support of all the knights.
“Good job, kid.”
Lucas gave her a thumbs up and praised her, but Rosette was out of her mind.
Her heart was beating fast, and she felt like someone was squeezing her lungs. It was a feeling similar to when she used high-level magic, but different.
“Thirsty…”
As she unknowingly muttered desperately, the knights around her quickly ran over with water.
“Here, young lady. Here’s water.”
The first to arrive was a knight in his late teens with reddish-brown hair and impressive freckles on the bridge of his nose.
“Thank…”
Rosette, who was receiving the water bottle from him, stopped for a moment. As she stared intently, the nameless knight smiled.
“Why are you looking at me like that? Is there something on my face?”
However, Rosette couldn’t say anything. She traced back her past memories.
‘I know that face,’ she thought.
The knight in her memory was more mature than he is now, but she definitely knew his face.
