15. An Unexpected Birthday Party (3)
After breakfast, Rosette began preparing for the party.
After washing up, the maids started to doll her up. She wore a pure white dress and flowers in her loosely braided hair.
“You look so beautiful!”
“Oh my, you’re so lovely.”
Rosette, encouraged by the maids’ fuss, looked in the mirror, surprised by her reflection.
‘I look like a princess.’
The fluttering dress and fancy accessories sparkled even more than what Elisha Dallas had worn on her birthday.
Her face still seemed plain, but it was bearable.
The maids, seeing Rosette’s shy blush, took her hand and led her to the greenhouse in the garden.
Although it was winter, various flowers bloomed inside the greenhouse. In the middle, there were three large round tables. The number of cutlery settings suggested more than fifteen guests.
Rosette looked at Joan with a puzzled expression and asked,
“Are guests coming?”
“Well…”
Joan smiled meaningfully. Just then, the Adrians, dressed neatly, entered.
Lukas spotted Rosette and rubbed his eyes in surprise.
“Wow! Shorty! You’re so pretty!”
“Really?”
“Yeah! I think you’re prettier than Isabel noona [older sister]!”
Rosette didn’t believe it. Isabel Adrian was the most beautiful person she had ever seen. In fact, before she turned back time, Isabel was rumored to be the most beautiful woman in society.
Prettier than Isabel? That’s ridiculous.
Rosette was embarrassed and changed the subject.
“But who else is coming?”
“Hmm, I wonder who’s coming?”
Lukas smiled playfully and looked at the entrance of the greenhouse. It was then.
“Rose!”
A familiar voice, one she didn’t expect to hear, rang out. At the same time, someone ran towards the greenhouse.
Rosette widened her eyes as she recognized the person.
“Jane unnie [older sister]?”
Rosette thought for a moment that she was mistaken. Jane looked completely different from the last time she saw her.
It wasn’t that her appearance had changed drastically, but she was neatly dressed from head to toe.
The clothes she wore weren’t as fine as Rosette’s, but they looked neat and of good quality. Her always messy hair was neatly combed and braided into pigtails. Her face, which had always been grimy from not washing well, was clean.
Could that be why? Rosette even had the absurd thought that the Jane in front of her wasn’t the real Jane, but an illusion.
As Rosette hesitated to approach Jane’s unfamiliar appearance, Duke Adrian gently nudged her forward.
“Go on. Didn’t you want to see her?”
Rosette, encouraged by him, took a step forward, then started running towards Jane.
“Unnie!”
Jane hugged her tightly.
“Rose, I missed you!”
“Are you really Jane unnie?”
Rosette’s voice trembled with emotion.
“Of course, it’s me!”
Jane cupped Rosette’s cheeks with both hands and looked at her.
“Wow, our Rose is like a different person. You’re so pretty.”
Jane’s voice was also tearful.
“Have you been well, my sister?”
“Yeah, how about you, unnie?”
“I’ve been well. After you left, Duke Adrian sponsored the orphanage generously, so there’s plenty to eat, and everyone’s doing well.”
“But how did you get here?”
“The Duke invited us all for your birthday!”
“Us?”
“Yeah, us!”
Jane turned around and gestured, and the children who had been waiting outside the greenhouse rushed in.
“Rose noona [older sister]!”
“Unnie!”
“Rosette!”
Rosette was instantly surrounded by the children she had been with in the orphanage. Looking at each of the children’s faces, Rosette finally burst into tears again.
“Everyone, I missed you.”
Some of the mischievous children laughed at her, and the tender-hearted children cried along with Rosette.
Hugging the children and crying, Rosette looked at Duke Adrian standing a few steps away and murmured silently.
‘Thank you, Duke.’
She dared to swear that it was the best birthday present in her entire life.
* * *
Rosette had a fun time with the children. The children ate the food made with all their heart by the chef of the Adrian mansion, ran around the garden, and returned to the orphanage around evening.
“Take care.”
“You too, unnie.”
At the end of the now familiar farewell, Rosette headed to her room.
She was about to change into her pajamas with the help of the maids and lie down on the bed when Duke Adrian entered with a knock.
“Ah, Duke.”
As Rosette ran to him, the Duke stroked her cheek.
“Did you have a good birthday?”
Rosette chattered in an excited voice.
“Yes! It was really fun! It was really the best gift. Thank you.”
“Actually, there’s another gift.”
“Another one?”
Duke Adrian handed Rosette the document he was holding. The top of the document read , and below it was information about Rosette’s personal details.
“Do you know what this is?”
Thanks to her past memories, she could read, but Rosette shook her head, pretending not to know. It would be normal for her not to know how to read.
Duke Adrian explained.
“It’s a document that proves you’ve been adopted into our Adrian family.”
“Then…….”
“Now you are officially Rosette Adrian, Rose.”
“Ah…….”
Rosette Adrian. Rosette murmured the name silently.
“I, I’ll really do better from now on, Duke.”
“You don’t have to do better. Just be yourself.”
“Yes.”
“But, Rose.”
“Yes?”
Duke Adrian cleared his throat and asked.
“How long are you going to call me Duke?”
Rosette blinked, not understanding what he meant, and the Duke added.
“Aren’t we really family now?”
“Family…….”
Rosette, still not understanding his intention, realized something and widened her eyes.
‘Could it be…….’
After a moment’s hesitation, she murmured a word she had never uttered in her past or present life.
“Fath……er?”
“Hmm.”
But Duke Adrian had a dissatisfied expression on his face.
‘Is this not it?’
Marquis Dallas had told her to call him ‘Marquis’ every time. Even if she became Duke Adrian’s adopted daughter, calling him ‘Father’ might have been too much.
Rosette was about to correct her title to ‘Duke’ again, but Duke Adrian spoke first.
“Isn’t there anything else besides Father?”
“Yes?”
“There must be another word with the same meaning as Father.”
A word with the same meaning… Thinking of a synonym for Father, Rosette murmured without much emotion.
“Dad……?”
Only then did Duke Adrian smile contentedly.
“Yes, Rose.”
“But…….”
Daniel oppa [older brother], Lukas oppa [older brother], and Isabel unnie [older sister] all call you Father, right?
Rosette couldn’t bring herself to ask that. As if he had roughly guessed her thoughts, Duke Adrian replied.
“I want to hear the word ‘Dad’ from my youngest, do you not like it?”
“No!”
Rosette said before he could even finish his sentence. It was the result of her body reacting before her head.
Duke Adrian widened his eyes slightly at her uncharacteristically proactive appearance. Rosette felt embarrassed for some reason and murmured.
“Dad… is good.”
It was an unfamiliar title, but it was only unfamiliar, not unpleasant.
Dad, Dad, Dad.
Rosette repeated the word silently with her lips, like a baby who had just learned the word.
Duke Adrian, watching her, picked Rosette up. Rosette was surprised and screamed, hugging his neck.
“Instead of that, won’t you call me out loud?”
Rosette lowered her head shyly and murmured.
“Dad.”
“Yes.”
Duke Adrian smiled and laid Rosette on the bed. Then he pulled the blanket up to her chin.
“Then have a good dream, our youngest daughter.”
After Duke Adrian left the room, Rosette covered herself with the blanket and stomped her feet. The inside of her throat tickled, and her toes wiggled.
“Rosette Adrian.”
Rosette murmured the name and smiled faintly.
That’s how the child who was Rosette Dallas went back in time and became perfectly Rosette Adrian.
* * *
Rosette stood still with her arms open, blinking. In front of her, Isabel sat on the sofa, looking at the catalog and giving instructions.
“That color is too dull for Rose. Use a brighter color.”
“Yes, Lady.”
At Isabel’s firm words, the staff from Madame Wide’s salon moved busily. They quickly removed the fabric that had been on Rosette’s body and draped a bright yellow fabric around her.
Isabel scanned Rosette up and down with an inscrutable expression.
‘Is it still not good?’
Rosette, who secretly liked the yellow color, wiggled her fingers under the fabric.
Come to think of it, she had always worn dark clothes in the Dallas family. She sometimes envied Elisha’s bright dresses but gave up at Elisha’s words, ‘If you wear bright clothes, your dull face will look even darker.’
As Elisha said, wearing bright colors seems to make her face look duller.
Rosette glanced at the mirror.
It had already been a month since she came to the Adrian mansion. During that time, Rosette had undergone many changes.
First of all, she ate well and slept well, so she gained more weight than when she first came. Her gaunt cheeks became slightly round, and she gained weight on her belly, which had been so flat that her ribs were exposed.
It wasn’t enough to be described as ‘chubby,’ but it was still a visible improvement.
And that’s not all. Thanks to Joan and the other maids who worked hard day and night to take care of her, her rough skin became moist and smooth.
Her face, which had been pale, also regained its color. Her hair, which had been dry like a broom, also became shiny.
If Jane or the other children saw her, they would probably ask if she was really Rosette.
But ridiculously, her face was different from when she lived in the Dallas family in the past.
She was adopted into the Dallas family, but Rosette’s treatment there was similar to that of the employees.
They provided her with food, clothing, and shelter, but she was not taken care of as a noble young lady, so she only gained a little weight, and her rough skin and dry hair did not improve.
Maybe that’s why. Rosette was unfamiliar with her changed appearance.
‘I thought I had improved a lot, but I guess not.’
As she was thinking that, Isabel nodded with a still expressionless face.
“Make a picnic dress with that. You know the design, right?”
Madame Wide, who was pointing at the catalog one by one, quickly began sketching on a memo pad.
“I will create a design that has never been shown before.”
“Don’t make the waist too tight, and make it easy to move around.”
“I understand.”
In addition to that, Isabel ordered several different clothes, such as outerwear, indoor wear, play wear, and pajamas. Rosette was surprised and waved her hand.
“There’s no need to go that far…….”
“Why?”
“If I eat a lot, I’ll grow taller, and also, I’ll get chubby…….”
“Are you saying that again?”
Isabel shook her head as if she was tired of it.
