186. The Truth of the Barrier (1)
May 4, 2024
“You……!”
In that instant, Becky launched herself at Rosette’s neck.
Rosette instinctively tried to cast a defensive spell. However, Becky couldn’t even graze her before Lucas, who had swiftly intervened, subdued her.
Besides Lucas, Joshua and other knights quickly surrounded them. Even Daniel, despite his injured leg, hobbled closer.
“Are you crazy?”
Lucas, with Becky’s arms pinned behind her back, hissed, his voice laced with fury.
“You just attacked our little one? Huh? Do you have any idea how hard she worked to save the subjugation force!”
Rosette had never heard Lucas’s voice so fierce. She was surprised to hear such a low growl come from him.
The imposing tone made Rosette flinch, but Becky, oblivious, struggled to break free.
The way she muttered incoherently and tried to attack Rosette was like a mindless beast.
Finally, Lucas forcefully pressed Becky’s shoulders down. She resisted, but eventually, she was forced to kneel on the ground.
“If you don’t want to die, let me go! I said, let me go!”
Unrefined mana surged from Becky’s agitated body. She had clearly stated she couldn’t use magic, making it a strange phenomenon.
Perhaps she was exhibiting superhuman strength when pushed to her limits.
Joshua, observing the scene, addressed Lord Roten with a stern expression.
“Bring the ropes. We’ll have to restrain her until she calms down.”
Lord Roten hesitated briefly but, seeing Becky’s erratic behavior, fetched the ropes.
Lucas and Lord Roten bound her tightly to a tree. Becky screamed and thrashed against the restraints.
“Listen to me! I said, listen to me!”
“Is she really insane?”
Lucas clicked his tongue, dumbfounded.
“Did the monsters have some kind of poison that drives people crazy? Like rabies. Otherwise, this situation is inexplicable. Right, brother?”
“We’ll know more as we watch her. Rose, come here. It’s dangerous.”
Rosette, about to approach Becky, was pulled back by Daniel, who gently wrapped his arm around her shoulders. He still seemed to see his youngest sister as an eight-year-old.
Even though she was clearly the strongest member of this subjugation force.
‘But I guess that’s the same with Lucas.’
Rosette spoke quietly to her two brothers, who were trying to keep her as far away from Becky as possible.
“I’ll talk to Lord Lane for a moment.”
“What talk! There’s no need to talk to a crazy person. And you won’t be able to get through to her anyway.”
“Lucas, watch your mouth.”
Daniel sighed softly but agreed with Lucas’s sentiment.
“Lucas is right, Rose. Lord Lane seems too agitated to talk right now, so let’s wait.”
“Still, I need to find out what’s going on. She just seems agitated to me, so I’ll use a calming spell and talk to her.”
Calming magic, as the name suggested, alleviated agitation or fear, so using it wouldn’t cause any lasting harm to Becky.
In any case, it was magic that interfered with the mind, so she tried to avoid using it if possible, but she had no choice given the situation.
‘She said I touched that person. Is she talking about Michael? If so, how does Lord Lane know about that? She said she’s no longer involved with the Magic Tower.’
Furthermore, Becky had said that we would all die.
She had been perfectly fine until a few hours ago, so it must have been the core that Rosette had discovered earlier that had triggered Becky’s outburst.
If all of this was truly Michael’s doing, there was no telling what he might do next. She had to question Becky as soon as possible.
“What conversation! She’s just acting out for no reason! She’s jealous because she can’t use magic, but you can!”
“Lucas, I didn’t ask for your permission this time.”
“Then?”
Without answering, Rosette carefully disengaged from Daniel’s hold and walked towards Becky. Lucas started to protest, but Daniel stopped him.
“Rose seems to have something in mind. Let’s trust her.”
Instead of pulling her back, the two men positioned themselves on either side of her, as if escorting her. Joshua followed closely behind.
Becky Lane screamed again as Rosette approached. Even with Rosette’s calming magic, she showed no signs of settling down.
“Calm down, Lord Lane. Nothing will be solved by you acting like this. Even if you kill me, what will change?”
“At least I can get out of his sight!”
“Who is ‘he’?”
“…….”
“Michael Lschelle?”
Becky’s eyes widened. Her lips, which had been tightly sealed at the question of who ‘he’ was, parted slightly.
“You have a look on your face that says, ‘How did you know?’ I’ll tell you if you answer my question.”
Behind her, Lucas’s voice grumbled, “Why does that bastard’s name keep coming up?” as if grinding his teeth. Rosette glanced at Joshua for help, and he addressed the two brothers as if giving an order.
“Daniel, Lucas. Step back for a moment.”
“But, Your Highness!”
“Silver and I will stay by her side, so don’t worry.”
Lucas looked like he wanted to argue, but Daniel pulled him away.
Rosette cast calming magic on Becky again. She wondered what she would do if it didn’t work this time, but Becky didn’t resist, perhaps because she was shocked by Rosette’s previous words.
Rosette could feel Becky’s agitation gradually subsiding.
“That’s a relief. I didn’t want to resort to other magic.”
“…….”
“Will you tell me now? What did Michael do? Before that, didn’t you say that even the magicians belonging to the Magic Tower don’t know the identity of the Magic Tower Lord?”
“…….”
“Lord Lane, if we all want to get back safely, please cooperate.”
Becky looked up and glared at Rosette and Joshua alternately. It was disrespectful to glare at Joshua, a prince, let alone Rosette. However, he didn’t point it out and waited patiently for an answer.
“Do you have the confidence to solve it if I tell you?”
“We have to try to solve it. That’s why we came here. But if you don’t tell me anything, we’ll just be caught off guard.”
“…….”
“I found a monument with ancient words written on it near the border a little while ago. You felt that energy too, and that’s why you’re so anxious now, right?”
Becky sighed deeply.
“Then untie me first. My arm hurts so much from being rubbed by the rope.”
“If you promise not to attack anyone.”
“It’s not going to work even if I attack. As you can see, I can’t even summon a familiar right now, so how can I physically attack and make a scratch on the Lady?”
Rosette nodded in agreement and drew her dagger. Silver nipped at her hem, and Joshua grabbed the hand holding the dagger.
[Woof!]
“Rose.”
“It’s okay. As Lord Lane said, there’s nothing she can do. She can use magic even when she’s tied up, so it’s the same whether she’s tied up or untied.”
“…….”
“Because there’s a barrier, so you can’t run away.”
Taking advantage of the brief moment Joshua loosened his grip, Rosette cut the rope.
Whether it was true that it hurt, the clothes rubbed by the rope were torn, and her skin was scratched red.
Rosette healed the wound and asked,
“So, are you ready to talk now?”
Becky slumped to the floor, looking resigned. Rosette also sat down, and Silver lay down next to her, resting her snout on her thigh.
“What should I say first?”
“How did you learn the identity of the Magic Tower Lord, and what kind of person is he? If possible, I’d like to hear why you left the Magic Tower.”
“If I tell you about the process of leaving the Magic Tower…”
Becky shuddered, as if recalling a traumatic experience.
“Because the reality of the Magic Tower was completely different from what I imagined.”
“Different?”
“Yes. I thought there would only be people who were truly obsessed with research in the Magic Tower. Of course, there are such people. But…….”
“But?”
When Rosette prompted her gently, Becky frowned.
“They were obsessed with praising the Magic Tower Lord, whom they didn’t even know. Even fanatics wouldn’t be that bad. I heard that it wasn’t like that originally, but the atmosphere seems to have changed since this Magic Tower Lord took over.”
“…….”
“So I left. I thought I would become like that if I stayed there. But…….”
Becky trembled.
“I was living comfortably as an Imperial Knight, but then the delegation from the Shelton Kingdom arrived, right? The moment I saw them, I knew right away that the Magic Tower Lord was among them. I don’t know what the Magic Tower Lord looks like, but I recognized the unique energy and mana wavelength he possessed. Of course, now that I think about it, it seems like the Magic Tower Lord deliberately didn’t hide it and exposed it in front of me.”
“And that’s Michael Lschelle?”
“Ha, what’s the point of hiding it now? Yes, that’s right. That man.”
Becky anxiously swept her hair back.
“That night, a white snake came to my lodgings and gave me a note. It told me to keep my mouth shut no matter what happened.”
“What happened?”
“I didn’t know what was going on at the time. I just thought it meant to hide the identity of the Magic Tower Lord. There was no reason to reveal it, so I didn’t bother to spread it around. But I only understood what it meant after the subjugation force was trapped here.”
She clenched and unclenched her fists repeatedly.
“Lady and His Highness the Prince may not feel it, but I can. This is a barrier created by the Magic Tower Lord and the Magic Tower.”
