200. Epilogue (1)
May 18, 2024
“I want to propose to you properly, in a place I’ve prepared, not you.”
“Pardon?”
Rosette, who had unconsciously questioned him, realized the meaning of his words and blushed again.
It was clearly the same story she was trying to tell, but hearing it from Joshua made it sound different.
“I hesitated a bit because you said you didn’t want to be empress, but if that’s what you want…”
Joshua smiled brightly, as if he was happy. It was the first time she had seen such a pure, clear smile.
“So please wait a little longer, Rose.”
Joshua got up from his seat and approached her. Rosette closed her eyes as she watched Joshua’s face getting closer.
The moment his soft lips touched her lower lip, she felt a shiver down her spine.
Rosette carefully wrapped her arms around Joshua’s neck. She whispered as they kissed.
“I can wait forever.”
She could feel Joshua pulling back his lips to smile. Rosette also laughed softly, following him.
Everything was just a happy day.
* * *
“The wind has become quite warm, hasn’t it?”
Joan asked as she styled Rosette’s hair. Behind them, maids were busily packing their luggage.
“The capital will be in full spring. There are many celebrations. Next week, His Highness the Prince will be appointed as the Crown Prince, and next month, the eldest young master will be getting married.”
“And there’s one more thing.”
Rosette turned her head and glanced at Joan’s lower abdomen, causing her to laugh embarrassedly.
“I wouldn’t exactly call that a celebration.”
“What do you mean it’s not a celebration? Of course, it is. Babies are all precious and should be blessed.”
Rosette smiled brightly.
Several months had passed since Rosette had been living with her family in the Adrian estate.
The cold but heartwarming winter in the north had passed, and the season had changed. Although sprouts had not yet appeared on the bare branches, warmth began to permeate the wind that had been blowing like a knife.
Perhaps the capital, located further south, was already sprouting lush new buds.
The people of the Adrian family usually spent the winter in the estate and returned to the capital in the spring.
This time, Rosette, who had spent the winter with her family in the Adrian estate, decided to return to the capital today.
She was moving a little earlier than usual. It was to see Joshua’s Crown Prince appointment ceremony, which was scheduled for next week, as Joan had mentioned.
In addition, Daniel and Ines’s wedding was scheduled to take place in the capital next month, so she had to go and finish the wedding preparations quickly.
And there was also good news for Joan and her husband, Chris. Joan was pregnant.
When Rosette first heard the news a few weeks ago, she was overjoyed as if it were her own.
Worried that Joan might overexert herself and harm her body, she told her that she could take a break from attending to Rosette for the time being, but Joan insisted that she was fine and stayed by her side.
Even though there were still seven months until the baby was born, Rosette was already looking forward to it.
“I want to be the godmother when the baby is born.”
“You, miss?”
“Yes. Of course, only if Joan is okay with it.”
“Of course, I’d love that. But it’s too much for me and the baby…”
“Too much? Joan is like family to me. Then this baby is like my nephew or niece. I want to cherish and love them a lot.”
Joan, who had suddenly become teary-eyed, dabbed at her eyes as if embarrassed.
“I’m such a crybaby. I’ve been so tearful lately… I’m really grateful just for your words, miss. The baby will surely be happy if they know they’re loved.”
“Let’s go see baby supplies together when we go to the capital. Let’s buy lots of pretty clothes and toys, and Joan can eat whatever she wants.”
“Okay, miss.”
Joan, who had regained her composure, brushed Rosette’s hair again.
“And if possible, I would also like to be the nanny for the child that you will have in the future.”
This time, Rosette became embarrassed and flustered. Joan burst into laughter.
“You’ll be meeting His Highness the Prince again soon. Maybe good news will come to you soon, miss.”
“Uh-huh…”
Rosette, recalling what Joshua had said a few months ago, ended up bowing her head in embarrassment.
While Rosette leisurely spent her time in the estate, Joshua spent busy days in the capital.
With the help of the Ivelin Kingdom, he worked hard on diplomatic activities to deal with the Magic Tower, and at the same time, as the only prince, he began to participate in state affairs in earnest.
Rosette exchanged letters with Ophelia and Joshua, and she heard how hectic his time had been.
She was able to grasp the situation in the capital in more detail from Ophelia’s letters than from Joshua’s letters, which mainly contained ordinary daily stories or longing and affection for Rosette.
Of course, Rosette didn’t just play around during that time. She worked with Celine and Melody to further develop the empire’s magic.
Melody was recognized for her abilities as a magician and was soon to be employed as a magic researcher at the Imperial Academy.
However, Rosette could not easily decide on her future.
She wanted to devote herself to magic research a little more, but that path seemed distant when she thought about her future with Joshua.
If she accepted his proposal and became the Crown Princess, would she be able to fully demonstrate her abilities?
Wouldn’t the Emperor or Joshua dislike that?
One day, when she tentatively confided such concerns in a letter, Joshua sent her a serious reply.
-I don’t want to clip your wings, Rose. You are most lovely and energetic when you are freely doing what you want to do. There is no reason to give up magic just because you enter the Imperial Palace. So you should do whatever you want to do, just like now. I will support you so that you can do that.
She was unnecessarily thrilled once again at those words.
Anyway, so Rosette was thinking of temporarily taking on a research position at the academy for the time being.
Magic, which used to be cursed, had now become a companion in her life.
“Hey, kid, are you ready?”
“Ah, yes!”
Rosette jumped up at Lucas’s voice, which suddenly came from the door. Lucas frowned at her face, which still had a slight blush.
“You’re so excited to go back to the capital, aren’t you?”
“No, not really…”
“You could have stayed in the estate a little longer, but what’s the rush…”
He looked at his younger sister standing in the room with a slightly 섭섭한 [Seopseophan: a Korean word describing a feeling of being slightly hurt, sad, or disappointed] face.
The Duke of Adrian didn’t say anything to his four children, but Daniel, Isabel, and Lucas roughly guessed what kind of story had been exchanged between the Duke and Joshua.
Perhaps when Rosette returned to the capital this time, Joshua, who had become the Crown Prince, would propose, and Adrian would have promised to support him.
The wedding between the two was expected to take place no later than next spring. That meant that this winter might be the last time Rosette stayed in the estate as an Adrian.
Lucas was more upset about that fact than anyone else in Adrian.
He had only lived with her for a year since returning from the Ivelin Kingdom. There were so many more things he wanted to do for her than he had already done.
But seeing Rosette counting the days until she met Joshua, rather than regretting leaving the estate, made him furious.
When did she say that Lucas was the best older brother, the best! That she liked me better than Daniel!
If Rosette had heard, she would have retorted, ‘I said I liked both of you, I didn’t say I liked you better,’ but Lucas ignored that fact.
In the end, Lucas stomped over and pinched Rosette’s cheeks.
“Ouch, Oppa! It hurts.”
“That’s why I’m doing it.”
“Why? Why all of a sudden…”
“I’m just angry when I see you.”
Joan chuckled and whispered.
“He seems very upset that he’s about to send you to His Highness the Prince.”
“That’s not it!”
“Oppa, if you shout like that, the baby will be surprised.”
Lucas was startled by Rosette’s rebuke and lowered his voice.
“Anyway, that’s not it. What does it matter to me if you marry His Highness the Prince? Why would I be upset? Anyway, if you’ve packed everything, come out. We’re about to leave.”
“Yes.”
Rosette looked at Lucas leaving the room and rubbed her tingling cheeks.
It wasn’t that she didn’t know Lucas’s heart. Rosette also wanted to spend more time with her family if possible.
‘But I want to be by Joshua’s side quickly.’
Joshua, who had been lonely all his life after losing Ophelia in the past. Now, Ophelia was safely living in the Imperial Palace, but that wouldn’t be enough.
But she also understood Lucas’s heart, so she felt a little complicated.
“The young master will understand everything. He’s just sulking because he’s upset right now, so give him a big hug later.”
“Okay.”
Rosette quickly got up and ran to the first floor, where Lucas was waiting.
“Oppa.”
She hugged him tightly and smiled.
“No matter what anyone says, you will always be my precious older brother.”
“Who said anything? Then I’m your older brother, not your younger brother?”
“You know that’s not what I mean.”
Lucas snorted and asked coyly.
“Then I’m better than Daniel, right?”
This time, Rosette decided to give him the answer he wanted without hesitation.
“Of course. You’re better, Oppa. You’re the best.”
Lucas’s eyes widened as if he didn’t expect her to agree so readily. He blinked silently for a moment, then cleared his throat and averted his gaze.
“Well, it’s good that you know. Then let’s go quickly. I have to see how my sister and Lord Roten are doing in the capital myself.”
“Okay.”
Rosette burst into laughter and led Lucas to the carriage.
No one knew what kind of story had been exchanged between Isabel and Lord Roten that day a few months ago.
Whenever someone asked, Isabel remained silent as if it wasn’t worth answering, and Lord Roten blushed as if embarrassed, but he kept his words to himself.
However, everyone could sense that the atmosphere between the two had subtly changed since that day.
