You Have Been Defended – Episode 211
Before heading to work, I stopped by Taesik’s office.
“What about Sanggil?”
“He’s been tailing Lee Sehyung since dawn. Said he went to the usual place.”
“Didn’t get anything new in the meantime?”
“Unfortunately, no.”
It had been a week since Sanggil started following Lee Sehyung, but he hadn’t found anything out of the ordinary besides the dates he went to Myungun University Hospital for rehabilitation.
“Is this getting urgent?”
“A little.”
The head of neurosurgery was on a business trip to a hospital in Cologne, Germany.
That meant Lee Sehyung’s fake surgery was happening soon.
I didn’t know if he had already gone and processed the documents, or if he had just gone to discuss it.
In any case, our deadline to reveal the truth was before Lee Sehyung left the country.
It would be too late after he returned.
If he made excuses that his prognosis was good and he started walking quickly, we’d have no case.
“Lee Sehyung will be leaving for Germany soon. We need to find out the exact date.”
“…To find that out, we’d have to bug him, wouldn’t we?”
Bugging.
That sounded good.
It’s not like we were going to use the evidence legally anyway.
When I stared at him instead of answering, Taesik stared blankly back.
After holding my gaze for a moment, Taesik finally seemed to realize what I was implying and shouted, widening his eyes.
“You’re telling me to bug him?”
“I never said that.”
“…Ah, well. That’s right. You never said that, Attorney.”
“It just means to use all available means possible, so don’t misunderstand.”
“Haha, of course. Then I’ll go make a phone call for a moment.”
Taesik pulled out his cell phone and called Sanggil.
“Hey, Sanggil?”
Then he winked at me and went into the president’s office.
I folded my arms and stared at the tightly closed door.
Finding out the date Lee Sehyung was leaving the country would be good.
Of course, finding out even more than that would be even better.
* * *
“Hello. Are you Choi Sanggil?”
“Ah, yes. Hello.”
Sanggil bowed deeply to the aide who approached him.
This was the Light and Salt Welfare Foundation for the Disabled, where Lee Sehyung worked as a welfare worker.
Today, Sanggil’s role was that of a kind-hearted man who volunteered as a day volunteer after being moved by Lee Sehyung’s documentary.
“It’s bathing day today. We needed a lot of help, so this is great. Do you need a volunteer activity confirmation form?”
“No, that’s okay!”
“Haha. Then come this way and I’ll give you a T-shirt to change into, and follow me. Got it?”
“Yes!”
The black T-shirt had a large, bright red heart drawn on it, and ‘Light and Salt’ was written in cute handwriting in the middle of the heart.
Seeing Bible verses written inside the facility and some of the people working there calling each other “pastor,” it seemed to be a Protestant foundation.
To be running a scam while working at a religious facility.
Originally, the whole group suffers because of one bad apple like this.
In the locker room, there were scraps of articles about the many activities that the Light and Salt Welfare Foundation for the Disabled had done so far.
The most frequent appearance in the articles was, of course, Lee Jungchan’s son, Lee Sehyung.
‘Does your God know you’re committing these sins!’
Sanggil stared at Lee Sehyung’s smiling photo and shouted inwardly.
Well, come to think of it, God is a god, so he probably knows.
‘But you’re standing by? God, aren’t you going too far?’
Ah, right.
Attorney Cha Juhan said he would expose all of this.
Then he’s bringing down the hammer.
‘You’re doing your job right. Sorry for misunderstanding you, Brother God.’
I cursed God in my heart, so I apologized just in case I might go to hell.
When I changed my clothes and went outside, the welfare worker who had given me various instructions was waiting for me.
“Today is the day for the people in this facility to take a bath, so many other volunteers will be coming.”
“I see. It’s my first time, but I’ll do my best!”
“You’ll be working with another welfare worker in a group of two, so if there’s an unexpected situation, just listen to the welfare worker.”
“Yes.”
I followed the welfare worker onto the elevator.
There were posters all over the inside as well.
Of course, it goes without saying that Lee Sehyung’s photo was plastered all over them.
Sanggil, who was carefully looking at the poster, suddenly spoke to the welfare worker.
“Welfare worker.”
“Yes?”
“I don’t know if I should say this, but I wasn’t really interested in welfare for the disabled before.”
“Haha, is that so? It’s natural that you don’t have time to look back on others these days because life is so hard. I don’t know how grateful we are to people like Choi Sanggil who volunteer to help.”
“Actually, I was greatly impressed by Lee Sehyung’s documentary that was replayed a while ago. Despite losing both legs in a sudden accident, he didn’t lose hope and worked hard… I was greatly impressed by his attitude of spreading God’s gospel to the world and humbling himself to help others.”
Sanggil recited a few passages he had gleaned from reading the newspaper published by the Light and Salt Welfare Foundation for the Disabled like a tape recorder before coming here today.
The welfare worker was very happy and readily accepted his words.
“Welfare worker Lee Sehyung is a really great person. He’s the son of Assemblyman Lee Jungchan, so he could live comfortably, but he’s doing such a difficult job. There are quite a few people who come to visit after watching Welfare worker Lee Sehyung’s documentary, like Mr. Choi Sanggil.”
“I see… Is Lee Sehyung at work today?”
“Of course. He’ll be running the program while we help them take a bath.”
“Then I’ll be able to see Lee Sehyung in person. I respect Lee Sehyung so much that I wanted to shake his hand even once.”
“Haha, yes. Of course. Welfare worker Lee Sehyung will be very happy to see people like Mr. Choi Sanggil.”
“Then will I have the honor of shaking hands with Lee Sehyung?”
“Say hello during lunch time. I’ll introduce you. Okay, let’s get off here.”
Following the welfare worker, I saw a circular, theater-like space right in front of me.
While Lee Sehyung ran the program here, we could bathe them.
There were more people than I thought.
I’m too lazy to wash my own body, so I sometimes skip it, but bathing others…
I was a little worried, but I decided to work hard because it was a rewarding job, and Sanggil walked to the bathroom with the welfare worker who was approaching him.
Had it been four hours like that?
“Ha, shit……”
Sanggil covered his mouth, wondering if anyone had heard the curse that came out without him knowing.
Fortunately, there was no one around.
The past four hours would be in the top 5 of the hardest times in my life.
The welfare worker said he was sorry that there were a few people who didn’t want to take a bath, and he happened to get those people.
‘But I did a good deed, so I feel a little proud. At this point, I’m probably 10 steps further away from hell.’
Sanggil had never done any volunteer work in his life, so he felt like his heart was being purified.
I even thought about going to volunteer when I had time.
“Mr. Sanggil! You have to eat!”
At that time, the welfare worker who had been working with me while getting hit by body wash foam approached me.
“Ah, yes!”
Was it finally time to meet Lee Sehyung?
The people staying at the facility had already finished their meals and went to other programs, and the welfare workers were left to receive their meals.
And Lee Sehyung was sitting at a table not far away.
“Mr. Sanggil, you said you wanted to say hello to Welfare worker Lee Sehyung earlier, right?”
“Ah, yes. Haha. He’s someone I really respect……”
“Come this way. Let’s have a meal together.”
I was in luck.
Sanggil followed the welfare worker to the table where Lee Sehyung was sitting.
“Welfare worker Lee Sehyung, this is Choi Sanggil, who came to volunteer today.”
“Hello! My name is Choi Sanggil. It’s an honor to meet you.”
Sanggil put his tray on the table and reached out his hand to Lee Sehyung.
Lee Sehyung smiled and shook his hand.
“Hello. You’ve worked hard today, haven’t you?”
“Oh, no. I’ve always admired Welfare worker Lee Sehyung, and it’s really nice to meet you like this!”
“Our Sanggil is so energetic, isn’t he?”
The welfare worker, who had a good impression of Sanggil, said a word to Lee Sehyung.
Lee Sehyung nodded and pulled out the chair next to him.
“Sit here.”
Next to him? That’s great.
Sanggil cheered inwardly and sat next to Lee Sehyung.
He had been busy chasing after Lee Sehyung’s tail, but this was the first time he had met him so closely.
You can’t tell what a person is like just by looking at their face, but he looked completely different from Lee Jungchan.
He really looked kind.
I heard that that was one of the reasons why he appealed to the public to some extent.
Sanggil took a big spoonful and shoved rice into his mouth, glancing at Lee Sehyung from time to time.
He was going to pretend to drop the spoon and attach a bug to Lee Sehyung’s wheelchair.
“I’ll get up first.”
But Lee Sehyung, who had arrived earlier than Sanggil and was eating, lifted his tray as if he had finished his meal.
Shoot. Then it was time to activate Plan B.
Sanggil shoved all the remaining rice into his mouth and stood up with him.
“I’m done eating too!”
“Mr. Sanggil, were you very hungry? Why don’t you eat some more?”
The welfare worker, who was eating with him, looked up at Sanggil, who was mumbling with his cheeks full.
Sanggil shook his head.
“No! Ah, welfare worker. How about a cup of coffee? There was a vending machine in front of us.”
“Ah… Um.”
Lee Sehyung rolled his eyes as if he was a little burdened by Sanggil’s active attitude, but soon smiled and nodded.
It seemed like he didn’t really want to, but he was forced to accept it because of his public image.
Well, Sanggil didn’t want to drink coffee with a scammer like Lee Sehyung, but he couldn’t help it because of work.
“Yes. Let’s do that!”
After putting Lee Sehyung’s and his own trays in the return area, Sanggil approached Lee Sehyung, who was waiting for him.
“Um, welfare worker. If you don’t mind, can I push your wheelchair?”
“Ah, this is an electric wheelchair……”
“…Ah, well, it was my wish to push Welfare worker Lee Sehyung’s wheelchair even once!”
Sanggil bowed his head 90 degrees, no, more than that, and asked.
Lee Sehyung looked troubled, but sighed briefly as if he couldn’t help it.
“Yes, go ahead. Haha……”
As soon as permission was granted, Sanggil approached Lee Sehyung from behind.
Then he quickly took out the bug he had in his pocket and held it in his hand.
“I’ll buy the coffee.”
Arriving in front of the vending machine, Sanggil said, taking out the coins he had prepared in advance from his pocket.
Lee Sehyung seemed to have become a little accustomed to Sanggil’s burdensome behavior, and just smiled and answered that he understood.
“Oops.”
Then Sanggil pretended to take out a coin from his pocket and dropped it on the floor.
“Oh, the coin fell. Just a moment.”
Then, as he pretended to pick up the coin, he attached the bug to the bottom of Lee Sehyung’s wheelchair.
“What kind of coffee do you want?”
“I’ll just have black……”
“Yes.”
Putting the coin into the vending machine, Sanggil slightly raised the corners of his lips.
‘Have plenty of coffee before your scam is revealed to the world. Hehe. Vending machine coffee is originally cream coffee [sweetened and with creamer]. You’re drinking black coffee… You’re such a foolish guy who doesn’t even know what’s delicious……’
