Dongwoong was so shocked, he wasn’t even angry. It’s true what people say: when you are too surprised, you can’t even feel anger.
‘Is he crazy?’
How could he dare to say such things after seeing them?
Who were they?
They were members of the Great Star Manor, infamous even among the Green Forest. Just seeing them was enough to scare most people.
How could this young kid be so brave to say such rude things?
“Y-you, you, you⋯⋯.”
Just as he was about to say something, the young man looked him in the eye.
“Oh, really?”
“⋯⋯Huh?”
The young man glared fiercely.
“Which bandit dares to meet my gaze?”
“⋯⋯.”
“Not lowering your eyes, you little punk?”
“⋯⋯.”
Dongwoong was so surprised, he couldn’t think of anything to say.
Dongwoong was handsome and used to getting his way. No one had ever been mean to him before. But to be spoken to like this by such a young person was a first for him.
“Y-you⋯⋯!”
Just as he was about to explode, his helper urgently called out from behind.
“C-chieftain! People are gathering!”
“What?”
Dongwoong looked around, worried.
The loud noise had woken people up, and they were coming outside. They looked around, talking to each other, and then stared at the bandits.
‘That dog-like bastard!’ Whether it was on purpose or not, that guy’s yelling was going to bring everyone in town.
‘Damn it.’ It seemed impossible to handle this quietly. Things had gone wrong from the start, and his anger grew.
But before he could say anything, the young man spoke first.
“Aiyoooo!” He suddenly started yelling. “Now the bandits are even attacking civilian houses!”
Huh? Civilian houses?
Dongwoong’s eyes widened.
“What civilian houses?” No, wait a minute. We didn’t come to attack civilian houses, but⋯⋯.
“Good heavens, attacking civilian houses at this hour! Even if you’re bandits, you have no blood or tears! No blood or tears!”
“⋯⋯.”
Starting with those words, the situation began to change in a way Dongwoong didn’t expect.
“Th-those⋯⋯! The bandits are now coming down to the cities.”
“It’s a relief! It’s a relief! What would we have done if the heroes of the Mount Hua Sect weren’t here! It’s fortunate they came today!”
“I’m saying the same thing, the same thing!”
As voices rose from behind, the Green Forest bandits turned to glare at the people watching.
“Eek!” Startled, they lowered their heads and moved back.
Dongwoong gnashed his teeth.
‘That fox-like bastard!’ The townspeople knew a little about the fighting world outside, but not much. How would they know that the Green Forest King was here, or that the Great Star Manor had come to capture him?
To the townspeople, it just looked like bandits were attacking the town in the middle of the night.
Dongwoong glared at Chung Myung, ready to kill him. But Chung Myung didn’t seem to notice and kept drinking.
“Kuh! Good.” Chung Myung wiped his mouth, looked at Dongwoong, and smirked.
“But this bastard keeps glaring, doesn’t he?”
“⋯⋯.”
“Ha⋯⋯. The world has really gotten better. The day a bandit glares at me has come. I’ve lived long enough to see it all.”
Back in the day, you little punk! Bandits would run away as soon as they saw us!
Chung Myung clicked his tongue and looked around. More and more people were gathering. About a tenth of the town was there.
‘With this, the stage is pretty much set.’ Chung Myung smiled and turned around.
“What are you doing? Why aren’t you crushing those bandit bastards?”
Then, a low voice came from inside the dark inn.
“Is just crushing them enough?”
“Make them tender.”
“Alright.”
Soon, a group of martial artists came out of the inn.
“⋯⋯.”
One, two⋯⋯ ten, no⋯⋯. Many people came out through the broken door and stood facing the Green Forest bandits.
They wore black martial robes and had faces that looked like they were ready to fight. Their muscles showed even under their clothes, making them look more like bandits than the bandits themselves.
The Green Forest bandits stepped back without thinking.
‘They said they were youngsters?’
‘Their faces are young, but their bodies aren’t!’
The Green Forest bandits knew something was wrong. If these were youngsters, who wasn’t a youngster? They looked like tough fighters. If it weren’t for their clothes, you couldn’t tell who was a bandit and who was a Taoist.
“They’re supposed to be bandits, but their bodies are surprisingly weak?”
“How well could people stuck in the mountains eat? They must be feeble.”
“Aren’t we stuck in the mountains too?”
“Oh? Is that so?”
The Mount Hua disciples smirked and looked at the bandits as if they were having fun.
And at that moment.
“Quiet.” Baek Cheon slowly walked out from behind. The Mount Hua disciples made a path for him.
Baek Cheon walked out and stood in front, brushing his hair back. He looked at the Green Forest bandits and the townspeople.
“Even though times are hard, thieves shouldn’t bother people where they live.” A sharp light shone in his eyes.
“The Mount Hua Sect can’t let this happen.”
It was similar to what Chung Myung had said, but the disciples and the townspeople reacted differently.
“Ooh!”
“The hero is going to defeat the bandits!”
“Of course! He is trustworthy!”
The crowd’s voices changed.
Then, Chung Myung’s shoulders drooped.
Jo Gul put his hand on Chung Myung’s shoulder and shook his head.
“⋯⋯What?”
“It’s okay, Chung Myung. That’s how life is.”
“What, damn it!”
“The world is not always fair, is it?”
“⋯⋯Dirty world.”
Could people really react this differently just because of how someone looked! Chung Myung felt wronged.
But Dongwoong was feeling even worse.
“⋯⋯These bastards⋯⋯.” Dongwoong’s face twisted as he understood the situation.
“You knew we were coming?”
“Oh, you just realized that now. Good job.”
“Huh.” Dongwoong laughed, surprised.
“These bug-like bastards⋯⋯. Traps only work on people who are easily tricked. You young kids don’t know who you’re messing with. Daring to go against our Great Star Manor!”
“What, coming from a bandit.” Chung Myung said and looked at Baek Cheon.
“It’s late, why don’t you wrap it up quickly?”
“I was thinking the same thing.”
Baek Cheon stepped forward and drew his sword. He pointed it at Dongwoong.
“If you surrender, I will let you live.”
“This young pup doesn’t know what he’s doing! Today, I will peel off your skin and make a drum out of it!”
Baek Cheon shouted, “Mount Hua!”
“Yes!”
“Defeat the evil-doers!”
“Yes!”
The sound of swords being drawn filled the night.
Watching over a hundred swords come out at once, perfectly together, was scary and powerful.
“Repel them!”
“Oooooooooh!”
At Baek Cheon’s signal, the Mount Hua disciples shouted and rushed forward.
The bandits, surprised by the sudden attack, swung their weapons.
“You little pups!”
“I’ll peel off your skins!”
They cursed and met the Mount Hua disciples.
The swordsmen and the bandits clashed.
The townspeople closed their eyes.
The bandits seemed stronger than the young Mount Hua disciples. Even if Mount Hua won, they would probably be hurt badly.
But what happened was different.
“Haaah!” Im Ping of the Azure Cloud yelled, his teeth clenched. He stared at the bandit in front of him, a huge man with a heavy sword. *I have to be strong!* Im Ping thought. His own sword felt light as a feather compared to the bandit’s weapon. He knew he couldn’t fight strength against strength. He had to be smart. He aimed to push the bandit’s blade to the side.
*Clang!* Im Ping’s sword met the bandit’s with a sharp sound. He put all his energy into the block.
*Crack!*
The bandit’s heavy sword suddenly broke! The broken piece flew back, hitting the bandit’s shoulder.
“Aaaaaaargh!” The bandit screamed and fell back.
Im Ping blinked, shocked. *What just happened?* He looked at his own sword. It was still in one piece. He had only meant to block, but his sword had shattered the bandit’s blade! A thrill went through him. *Did I really do that?*
But Im Ping wasn’t the only one surprised.
“Aaaaaaargh!”
“Wh-what is it, these bastards!”
“What kind of power⋯⋯!”
People were yelling in surprise. Im Ping looked around.
The Mount Hua disciples were pushing back the Green Forest bandits. The Mount Hua disciples moved like lightning, their blades cutting through the bandits’ defenses. Bandits cried out as they were knocked back, their heavy weapons useless against the fast attacks.
“What, these bastards?”
“No, why are these kids so weak compared to how they look?”
The Mount Hua disciples were more confused than the bandits. Even though they were from the Great Star Manor, were they really this weak?
Then, a low voice was heard from behind.
“What are you all doing?”
Everyone turned around.
Baek Cheon was walking out with his sword drawn.
“I told you to finish it quickly?”
“⋯⋯.”
He looked calm, as if this was normal. The Mount Hua disciples felt confident.
‘Those bastards aren’t weak. We’re strong!’
They held their swords tighter.
“Smash them to pieces!”
“Let’s gooooo!”
Filled with courage, they shouted and began to defeat the bandits.
It was the start of the legend of the Plum Blossom Swordsmen.
