Roman Dmitry. Everyone was talking about him. It felt like the name was buzzing in the air.
Count Fabius rushed forward, pushing past the other nobles to be the first to greet Roman.
“Welcome! Welcome!” Fabius boomed, his smile wide enough to show all his teeth. “I’ve heard so much about the famous Roman Dmitry! It’s a real honor to meet the hero of Cairo, the one who beat the Hector Kingdom!”
He looked like he might actually hug Roman, he was so excited. The other two nobles, caught by surprise, quickly jumped in.
“Much better looking than I expected,” one said quickly.
“Yes,” agreed the other, “When such a handsome man appeared, I almost thought I was seeing things!”
The air was thick with fake smiles and loud greetings.
From a distance, it might have looked like a friendly party. But the three nobles were determined to outdo each other.
Each noble knew why the others were there.
These nobles from the capital were taking control of Cairo for themselves. They wouldn’t have bothered coming to this unimportant war zone in the south unless they really wanted something.
Their master had said:
“The southern front doesn’t matter much. First, get Roman Dmitry on our side. Even if we lose the war with Hector, the King will be blamed. But if another noble group gets Roman Dmitry, we will become weaker compared to them. He stood his ground against the five-star swordsman Butler. Do whatever it takes to get him.”
A special order had been given.
Count Fabius glanced at Roman’s face.
It wasn’t just empty flattery.
He hadn’t expected Roman Dmitry, who was achieving so much, to look so young.
‘Roman Dmitry was very young, maybe in his twenties. He was also the oldest son of the Dmitry family, who were powerful in the north. They were not nobles by birth, which was a small problem, but Roman Dmitry was definitely good enough to work in the capital. And if I can bring such a talent into our group, Marquis Benedict will value me even more.’
Again.
Count Fabius took the lead.
“Please, sit here.”
“Thank you.”
“You might not know, but I work for Marquis Benedict. Marquis Benedict mentioned that he knew Roman Dmitry and arranged for you to be sent to the southern training camp. He didn’t expect the war to happen and just wanted to be kind, but he asked me to apologize for how things turned out.”
“It’s alright. I know it wasn’t on purpose.”
“Haha, is that so?”
Even though it wasn’t a big deal.
Count Fabius smiled brightly as he replied.
“Even so, Marquis Benedict is worried. Please meet with him later. He has a special gift for you, because he doesn’t want anything to happen to Roman Dmitry. You are a star who will light up Cairo, after all; it wouldn’t be good if you got hurt here, would it?”
The meeting changed suddenly. They were supposed to talk about the war, but Count Fabius didn’t seem to care about that anymore.
The other nobles were the same.
Seeing them so openly greedy, they added their own offers.
“I hope Count Gregory contacts you soon. I’m sure it will be a very helpful connection for Roman Dmitry.”
“Count Denver has sent his family’s soldiers. They will follow Roman Dmitry’s orders and are ready to die for him. This is not a request for anything in return, but a small gift from Count Denver to Roman Dmitry.”
They didn’t hide what they wanted.
They brought out their prepared offers, all trying to win Roman over.
However.
Instead of being pleased, Roman’s expression became serious.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
They hadn’t understood what kind of person Roman was.
Meanwhile.
Roman had never hidden his actions.
Roman had shown everyone what he could do. The powerful nobles saw this and, like greedy people, they all wanted him for themselves.
Four powers.
Four attempts to persuade him.
It made sense.
He had planned to use the attention of the powerful to buy time to grow, but he had to consider the right time and place.
Roman said.
“I know why you’ve come to me. Marquis Benedict, Count Gregory, Count Denver—you have all asked for my loyalty. I haven’t been able to decide, so I’ve waited. Choosing who to be loyal to is a big decision that lasts forever. That’s why I need to think carefully. Thank you for your kind offers, but this is not the right moment to talk about this. The enemies who attacked the Cairo Kingdom are right in front of us. They have planted their flags in our land and are boldly standing tall. I don’t think it’s right to talk about which noble I will serve when our enemies are right in front of us, attacking our land.”
He spoke clearly.
On purpose.
He showed his displeasure.
Roman knew that his words would only make them want him more.
‘I have made the competition obvious and shown that I am having trouble deciding. The fact that I am a loyal person who doesn’t make quick choices will only make them more anxious. I need to keep a good distance from the four powers at all times. So they can’t give up on me, so they desperately want me. And if I clearly tell them when I will decide, they will have to wait, no matter what I say.’
He had taken control of the situation.
The nobles were surprised.
He had made a strong impression on them.
“Fighting in this war made me realize I don’t know much about the world. I’ve been living in a small world, like a frog at the bottom of a well. So, after we win against Hector, I want to prove myself. I will compete in the sword ranking competition to become the best swordsman in Cairo. Please wait until then. I will prove myself and give my sword to one person.”
The best sword in Cairo.
It was a tempting offer.
Just hearing those words, the nobles’ eyes filled with desire.
They didn’t speak rashly.
Since Roman had told them not to talk about it now, they thought about how to tell their lords about this.
“So.”
He opened the map with a flourish.
He changed the subject and looked directly at the nobles’ faces.
“How about we focus on the current situation for now?”
The situation was settled.
The fierce competition was paused for a moment.
At Roman’s suggestion, they started planning how to attack the Hector Kingdom seriously.
“If Roman Dmitry’s warning is right, we have to capture the rear base within three days. So, do we need to think too much? A direct attack. We’ll destroy the walls with Flares, put ladders against the walls, and fight head-on. The Hector Kingdom only has about ten thousand soldiers. We have twenty thousand, so even if we fight directly, we have a good chance of winning.”
It was Count Fabius.
Since it was the simplest plan, it also had obvious problems.
Baron Brahim said.
“I agree that overwhelming them with numbers is the safest way. But, doing that would cause a lot of damage to our forces. The Hector Kingdom has probably prepared defenses against Flares, and sieges are battles where a small number can fight a large enemy. If we fail in the siege, we’ll have to fight a never-ending battle, instead of finishing it in three days.”
“I agree. Instead of such a simple plan, we need a strategy that will end this quickly.”
Opinions were divided.
There was no clear solution.
In the end.
It was a battle to capture the castle.
No matter how much they thought, they couldn’t find a way to destroy the strong walls and defeat ten thousand enemies without losing soldiers.
Some losses were unavoidable.
Still, they hoped to find a clever solution by using the strategy meeting, but as the meeting went on, opinions leaned towards the plan they had mentioned at the start.
Count Fabius asked.
“What does Roman Dmitry think?”
Everyone looked at him with hope.
A famous general who had defeated ten thousand with two hundred soldiers.
They thought Roman Dmitry might have a different solution.
“My thoughts are the same as yours. The rear base was a strong location, the last defense of the southern front. Once it’s lost, a long war is unavoidable. If three days pass like that, the enemies will create problems through the warp gate.”
“Are you saying there’s no way?”
They seemed disappointed.
They had expected so much from Roman, so hearing a common answer wasn’t enough.
As he had told them.
There was no easy solution.
However.
“It’s not that there’s no way at all. I’ll tell you about two ways to end the war quickly. The important thing in this plan is not the situation but ‘people.’ I can’t promise the plan will work, but if a full-scale war is unavoidable, I think it’s worth trying.”
Then, Roman started explaining.
The nobles, who had looked suspicious at first, were soon completely focused on Roman’s explanation.
Ding, ding, ding—
It was the sound of the war alarm.
When they heard that the Cairo Kingdom had moved its forces, the soldiers of the Hector Kingdom quickly climbed onto the walls.
“Hold your positions!”
“The enemies are coming!”
In the distance.
The flag of Cairo was visible.
Seeing the enemies rushing like a wave made them shiver, but the soldiers of the Hector Kingdom weren’t afraid.
They had to get food and return to their families.
That responsibility overcame their fear. They also believed that sieges were battles where the defenders had an advantage.
Step, step, step.
They lined up on the walls.
The archers readied their arrows and prepared to attack the Cairo Kingdom at any moment.
“Wait.”
Edwin Hector.
He raised his hand.
The enemies weren’t close enough yet.
Shooting arrows from a distance would be a waste, so he waited calmly for the right moment.
Then, something strange happened.
The soldiers of the Cairo Kingdom moved to the sides.
Instead of magical weapons like Flares, a single person walked forward.
‘What is this?’
At first, he didn’t understand.
Could it be a messenger?
He thought the Cairo Kingdom might be trying to send a message, but then he saw the person’s face.
‘Roman Dmitry!’
His expression turned cold.
Roman Dmitry had made a big impression on Edwin Hector.
He had killed seven hundred soldiers overnight and had tried to kill him, even when he and Butler attacked together.
His senses sharpened.
He didn’t know what the other side was planning, but he prepared to attack as soon as they were in range.
One step.
One step.
Roman’s face became clearer.
Just as he was about to gather his mana and attack, Roman shouted with a voice full of mana:
“I am Roman Dmitry of the Cairo Kingdom! I, Roman Dmitry, as a warrior representing the Cairo Kingdom, challenge Butler of the Hector Kingdom to a duel!”
Suddenly.
Everyone froze.
Those words were enough to shock the Hector Kingdom.
