61. You Prove It – 1
The Curtid Ruins were located near the Baradis territory and were quite famous, even within the Scarlet Kingdom.
“The investigation has only reached the second floor so far. No further investigation has been possible for over a year.”
“Isn’t it just two floors originally?”
“Looking at the structure of the ruins, there should definitely be a third floor.”
But no one has yet found the entrance to that third floor.
Graegin, who had even mentioned that it was famous for that reason, took a sip of water.
“I heard from the archaeological society that he seems to have found a way to enter the third floor. Perhaps that relic is what he needed then.”
“Even if he wants to go in there that badly, to deceive a nun and steal a relic? Is he crazy?”
Graegin immediately agreed with Ian’s bewildered reaction.
“Exactly. Anyway, the person in charge of the ruins apparently discovered him entering. That happened about 12 days ago.”
“And they still haven’t caught him?”
“Nope.”
“What’s the reward?”
“A relic called a Moonstone. In terms of the Solar Church’s relics, it’s just below the Solar Flare Stone.”
That’s good enough.
Let’s take both the relic I’ll receive as a reward and the relic that adventurer stole.
Ian got up from his seat and said,
“Shall we head there right away without wasting time?”
“Let’s go to the academy first and sort this out a bit.”
“Oh, right. And one more thing. Teach me some Unlock magic.”
“Why that?”
“I’m planning to spend winter vacation in the Forgotten City.”
“Okay. Bring back a lot from there. Try to enter the tower if you can. Any other magic?”
“I’m a bit drawn to lightning magic. Like Chain Lightning.”
The magic from Ian’s original world is too powerful compared to the magic in this world.
Of course, it’s possible to adjust it, but it would be better to just learn new magic here.
Ian recalled the Chain Lightning he had seen before, and he was perplexed.
“That’s a bit difficult, so it’s hard to learn.”
“Hey, I’m Ian.”
As he said with a smile, Graegin shrugged.
“I guess so. I’ll teach you the basics, Lightning Bolt, first.”
Graegin placed the relic he received from Ian this time in the vault of the academy’s relic research society.
Then, Graegin took out two magic books from there and handed them to Ian.
“Unlock magic is divided into two types: unlocking physical locks and unlocking magical locks. Have you ever used a lockpick?”
“I’ve elevated that to an art form.”
“Seriously, is there anything you can’t do?”
Graegin handed over the locks and lockpicks he had brought.
“Try unlocking them. You need to be able to unlock physical locks directly to easily understand Unlock magic.”
-Click, click, clack.
As he unlocked all the locks in an instant, Graegin narrowed his eyes.
“Are you a thief in a past life?”
“Call me the magician of lockpicks.”
Of course, the lockpick he used back then was special, but even with ordinary lockpicks, unlocking these locks was nothing.
“Then we can skip the basics. You can think of lock magic as a puzzle. You decipher the magic circle and unlock it.”
Graegin turned the page.
He pointed to the remaining magic circles, excluding the ones in the beginning, and tilted his head.
“But…”
Graegin stroked Myane, who was toasting bread on the table.
“Myane can nullify magic, right? Is there really a need to learn Unlock magic?”
“I can’t have Myane crying when I need to move quietly.”
“I guess that’s true. Then memorize all these magic circles.”
Ian began to read the magic circles in the book.
* * *
The next day, the two headed straight to the gate [teleportation portal].
As they arrived, the magician cautiously said,
“Student, you must not use magic while using the gate.”
“Ah. Sorry.”
Yesterday, he memorized all the magic circles in the Unlock magic book.
And he was practicing Unlock magic by actually implementing the magic circles.
As Ian deactivated the magic circle in his hand, Graegin stated the destination.
A moment later, the gate appeared, and the two immediately entered.
And both were taken aback.
“What’s this?”
There were quite a few knights and soldiers in front of the gate.
Judging by their proper attire, they seemed to be regular troops of the Baradis County.
One of the knights saw Ian and Graegin and approached them, asking politely,
“Excuse me, but could I see your identification?”
The two showed their academy student IDs without saying much.
The knight bowed deeply upon seeing them.
“What’s going on? Why are so many people gathered here?”
Ian asked, and he answered cautiously,
“A crazed master called the Cannibal Kaheldok is rampaging near the Baradis territory.”
The knight rummaged through his belongings and took out a booklet.
It was a list of those officially designated as enemies of the kingdom by the Scarlet Kingdom.
“The Cannibal Kaheldok, who eats people in pursuit of immortality. There’s also talk that Redbeard Baba will appear, aiming for him.”
Cannibal Kaheldok or Redbeard Baba.
Both are officially designated as enemies by the Scarlet Kingdom.
Graegin, who read the pages with their portraits, crimes, and bounties, sighed.
“That’s scary.”
“Tell me about it. Especially since there have been many bad things happening in the territory lately.”
Ian, seeing him sigh deeply, pointed to the soldiers and knights.
“I wonder if they can catch them with this many people.”
Ian looked around.
Could they really catch a master with the soldiers and knights here?
“That’s why everyone is anxious.”
Especially since the Cannibal, as his name suggests, devoured all the nobles of a noble family’s mansion.
Not only do they have to face such a terrifying person, but also Baba.
They wanted to run away immediately.
“That must be tough.”
“What can we do? It’s still our territory, and we have to protect it. And does a master not die when hit by a sword?”
The knight said, trying to muster courage, and Ian and Graegin nodded.
It was a common story even at the academy.
Just because someone is a master doesn’t mean they are immortal.
And they are stepping up like that for the safety of the territory, so what can they say?
While they were talking to the knight, the luggage check was completed.
As they confirmed that there were no particular problems and cleared the way, Graegin shuddered.
“This feels ominous from the start.”
“Retreating isn’t my style.”
“That’s true. Anyway, let’s go.”
Since they didn’t have any business in the Baradis territory, the two immediately changed direction.
As they headed towards the Temple of the Moon instead of the territory, the number of people gradually decreased.
“What’s with this road? They should maintain it.”
The road was quite rough, as if the maintenance had been stopped halfway.
Even though the Order of the Moon has many followers from different races with good physical conditions, there must be humans among the believers, so what’s with this road?
At this rate, how would believers come easily?
As Graegin said while passing through the vines, Ian chuckled.
“We’re here. That’s it, right?”
The shabby building in front of the forest is visible.
As they arrived in front of what looked more like an office than a temple, a gloomy-looking wolf beastman priest was sweeping the yard.
Graegin approached him and said with a smile,
“Hello.”
“Ah. Welcome. Have you come to pray?”
“No. We came with an introduction from Baron Parkinson.”
“Parkinson…? Ah! From the Archaeological Society! Welcome!”
He perked up his ears and smiled brightly.
“I’m Paul. Welcome.”
Ian and Graegin were guided inside by him.
This Temple of the Moon was really small compared to the Temple of the Sun.
As they entered a small room that seemed to be used as a priest’s office, he said in a dejected tone,
“Um… First of all, there’s something I need to tell you. Our Order of the Moon is…”
Poor.
So even if they carried out the request, they couldn’t pay the reward in cash.
“I heard it would be paid in relics.”
“Yes. Relics. A very good relic called a Moonstone. But… we don’t have any money.”
“We don’t need money.”
“Really?”
His tail wagged with joy at those words.
Ian immediately said at his reaction,
“You could raise quite a bit of funds if you sold the relics.”
“Such impious things are a bit…”
How could a priest sell items imbued with divine power for secular money?
He lightly made the sign of the cross and shook his head.
“Relics are to be given to those who help the Order of the Moon. Also, the Moon Goddess spoke of the importance of labor…”
This is the difference between the Order of the Moon and the Solar Church.
Unlike the Solar Church, which is somewhat involved in secular affairs and sells relics for money, the Order of the Moon is truly devout.
So devout that they are poor.
“Let’s talk about the job. What relic was stolen?”
“It’s called the Crescent Moon Necklace, which was kept in our temple. It was taken.”
“Is it valuable?”
“It’s valuable from the perspective of the Order of the Moon. But I don’t know if it would be valuable to ordinary people.”
“Doesn’t it contain much divine power?”
“Yes. It has more symbolic meaning than divine power. It was taken… Ah. How should I apologize to the Moon Goddess…”
As Kirke accessed the truth and found out additional information, Ian made an uncomfortable expression.
He was planning to secretly take the stolen relic as well, but if it’s that insignificant, it’s meaningless.
He asked with regret,
“Then if we find the Crescent Moon Necklace together, will you give us two Moonstones?”
“I’ll give you three.”
“If you have any information about him, please.”
Paul took out a piece of paper as if he had been waiting for it.
There was a drawing of a fairly handsome human man.
“Karl Ikman.”
“Even the name isn’t accurate. It might be fake.”
“Have you checked with the Adventurers Guild?”
“They say there’s no such adventurer. But the nun said he definitely had an adventurer’s badge.”
“There are many who forge their identities in that way.”
As Graegin explained, Paul sighed deeply.
“Our nun has only lived in the main temple, so she doesn’t know the world well. So…”
She read books to learn to write since she was young, and they were romance novels.
She had a romantic view of the world while reading them.
Karl used that to deceive the nun and steal the Crescent Moon Necklace.
“Please, I beg you.”
“How many people have come to solve this?”
“Besides the saints? Three more people came 7 days ago.”
“I understand. Then we’ll be going.”
There was no reason to hesitate since it was already late.
Ian and Graegin said goodbye and came out immediately.
“It was said that he was discovered near the Curtid Ruins, right? Let’s go.”
As Graegin went ahead, Ian said to Kirke.
“Search for him in the Curtid Ruins.”
‘What about the third floor?’
“Huh? Why?”
Kirke calmly explained to Ian, who was puzzled.
“What’s there?”
Kirke calmly replied to Ian’s question.
Ian shook his head at that answer.
“A sphinx. Seriously. That’s why you shouldn’t mess with dimensions carelessly.”
As Kirke said.
Ian nodded with a bitter smile.
“It’s because they don’t know the horror of that ending.”
