Don’t Get Caught by Your Husband! Extra Story 7. Meeting the Baby (128/130)
#Extra Story 7. Meeting the Baby
2024.06.09.
Escalion paced the hallway, his nerves on edge.
The uneasy feeling kept gnawing at him, making it impossible to maintain his composure.
Unable to bear it any longer, he kicked the hallway carpet in frustration, glaring at Volf with irritation.
“Why is it taking so long? Bella is in pain.”
“First births usually take a while,” Volf replied, trying to sound calm.
Though he pretended to be unconcerned, he was also struggling with anxiety.
He couldn’t shake off the worry that his slender and petite mistress might not endure this arduous process.
Another soft moan echoed from beyond the door. Escalion squeezed his eyes shut, groaning.
“This is driving me crazy…….”
The fact that he couldn’t do anything for his suffering wife tormented him the most.
“Just a little more!”
From inside, the midwife’s voice rang out, followed by Belladona’s scream.
Escalion took an anxious breath, wishing he could cover his ears.
“Almost there! That’s it! Just a little more! Just a little more!”
“Uwaaaah……!”
Finally, with the midwife’s shout, the baby’s cry erupted.
Upon hearing the baby’s cry, Escalion immediately threw open the door and strode towards the bed. He pulled back the curtains without hesitation.
“Bella!”
The midwife skillfully and quickly took the baby, washed it, wrapped it in a soft, warm cloth, and handed it to Belladona.
Belladona, soaked in sweat, weakly accepted the baby.
She gazed at the child with overflowing emotion, then looked up at Escalion, who approached her, and the corners of her lips curved into a smile.
“Escalion…….”
Escalion reached out to her, not even properly looking at the baby.
Her disheveled appearance, a result of the difficult labor, was evident.
Though exhausted, her blue eyes were filled with warmth as she looked at the baby.
At that moment, he felt a hot surge of emotion welling up inside, constricting his throat.
It soon surged up, passed through his throat, touched the tip of his nose, and made his eyes burn.
Experiencing this unfamiliar emotion for the first time, Escalion tried to hide it as he spoke.
“Bella…….”
The end of his voice, forced out through the strange emotion, cracked terribly.
He took a slightly trembling breath and covered Belladona’s small hand with his own.
“Isn’t he cute?” Belladona asked, showing him the baby in her arms.
The baby was still crying loudly, clenching its small fists and wriggling.
To be honest, it didn’t look very cute to him.
Its face was redder than he expected, its eyes tightly shut and terribly wrinkled, making it impossible to tell who it resembled.
Escalion averted his gaze from the baby and looked back at Belladona.
“You’re the cute one.”
“Huh? I’m a complete mess, though?”
“You’re cute in my eyes.”
As he spoke, he felt the emotion that had been warming him from the inside spreading further.
Belladona’s figure, looking up at him with a puzzled expression, gradually blurred, but returned to normal as he quickly blinked.
“Escalion……. Are you crying?” Belladona asked cautiously.
Crying? Me?
As he shook his head in denial, something fell to the floor with a soft patter.
Escalion stared blankly at the liquid that had soaked the floor, creating a circular pattern.
“What, are you really crying? I’ve never seen Escalion cry before!” she said with a small laugh.
Escalion continued to shake his head, raising a hand to roughly wipe his face. His rough touch came away damp.
“Ah, what’s wrong with me? How unsightly.”
“You look cute in my eyes, though?”
“Don’t tease me.”
Escalion pulled at his upper garment and rubbed his eyes.
Belatedly, his legs gave way, and he tried to sit on Belladona’s bed, but the midwife, who had been waiting behind him, quickly pulled him away, not wanting to miss the opportunity.
“Lord! Please come out now! The Lady needs to rest.”
“Huh?”
Escalion was pushed back in an instant, further separating him from Belladona.
He blinked his moist golden eyes, staring blankly as the doctor and midwife busily moved around his wife.
“Hold the young master for a moment!”
“Huh?”
The midwife, in the midst of all this, took the baby from Belladona and handed him to Escalion.
Taken aback, Escalion blinked, unsure of what to do as he held the baby.
He moved his arms in an awkward posture, as if carefully holding a very small and warm loaf of bread that could slip away at any moment.
The baby, who had stopped crying, was now wiggling its small mouth and hands without even opening its eyes properly.
“…….”
Ah, again.
That unfamiliar emotion washed over him once more.
Escalion, who had been blankly watching the baby move, strained his eyes again, trying not to let them get wet.
He couldn’t rashly define this strange emotion.
It could have been relief, or it could have been emotion. It could have been gratitude, or it could have been love.
Escalion slowly exhaled, tightening his grip on the baby.
Belladona’s dazzling silver hair, and her overall delicate features, came into view.
And unlike a moment ago, they all felt incredibly lovely.
“……Cute.”
He stood alone in the room, where people were running around in a frenzy, gazing at the baby for a long time.
* * *
“Uwaaaaaah!”
The baby’s cry echoed throughout the castle.
Pileus, who was just over six months old, had a loud voice and grew at an extraordinary rate, perhaps because he resembled his father.
Belladona woke up to the sound of the loud crying.
“I’ll go, you sleep more,” Escalion said, getting up from the bedside and gently stroking Belladona’s shoulder.
Belladona barely lifted her face, unable to fully open her eyes, and looked up at him.
‘I want to go, but……. I’m too tired.’
“Okay, I understand. Sleep more.” Escalion nodded as if he understood her feelings, and laid her back down.
As soon as she rested her head on the pillow again, she heard him get out of bed and walk into the baby room connected by a small passage.
With him, who had a warmer body temperature than her, gone, she felt the bed cool down in an instant.
Belladona reached out to his spot with a sense of longing.
‘What time is it…….’
The darkness outside the window suggested it was still early morning.
‘Our son, you’re quite diligent…….’ Belladona chuckled and raised the corners of her lips.
Naturally, the image of the child, who looked exactly like her husband, came to mind.
Thick eyebrows and burning golden eyes, and the way he would cry loudly if he didn’t like something, not to mention his growth rate, which was already on a different level from other children.
These days, she often felt resentful that the only trace of herself in the child seemed to be his shimmering silver hair.
Fortunately, he was still very young and hadn’t gone out much, so his skin was still quite fair, but she thought that once he started walking and running, he would quickly get tanned and have a darker complexion, making him look even more like Escalion.
“……It would be reassuring to have Escalion and Pileus on either side of me later on.”
‘I just hope he doesn’t grow up to be too scary…….’ Belladona buried her face in Escalion’s pillow, lost in unnecessary thoughts.
In the morning, the baby would be looking for his mother. She had to enjoy this short break as much as possible until then.
“Bella!”
But just as she was about to fall back asleep, Escalion returned to the bedroom with a somewhat tense voice.
“Huh?”
Belladona was startled and raised her head.
In the passage, Escalion stood blinking, holding Pileus in his arms.
Pileus, in his arms, also turned to look at her, blinking his eyes.
‘What’s with that look?’ The two of them, looking at her with messy hair from just waking up, were somehow funny and cute.
But in the midst of all this, Escalion’s expression was unusual.
She, who had been about to smile softly, noticed that his face was subtly stiff and slowly raised her body.
“What’s wrong? Is Pileus sick?” Escalion immediately shook his head.
‘If he’s not sick, that’s a relief for now……. What on earth is wrong? What did he see to make such a surprised expression?’
“What’s wrong?” Belladona asked again. She raised her upper body and gently patted the spot next to her.
Only then did Escalion slowly move towards her.
Belladona looked up at her husband and child with a worried expression.
‘What’s going on……?’
“Then why…….”
“He has a tooth.”
“Pardon?”
Escalion, who had approached, said something completely out of the blue.
‘What does he have?’
“Pileus has a tooth. Take a look for yourself.”
As she blinked, Escalion took a deep breath and stretched out his arms, pushing Pileus in front of her.
Belladona glanced at Pileus, who was flailing his short arms towards his approaching mother, then turned her head back to look up at Escalion.
‘Is that what he’s being so serious about right now?’
“Isn’t it amazing? He already has a tooth? Two on the bottom.”
“Ah…….”
His deep golden eyes were sparkling as if he had discovered the most amazing and greatest thing in the world.
