#Side Story 9. Staying Warm Forever
2024.06.10.
Belladonna, upon entering the hallway, abruptly handed Peleus to Cindy, who was waiting nearby.
Cindy, caught off guard, blinked in surprise as she received the child.
“Could you play with Peleus in the playroom? And if he gets sleepy, please put him down for a nap.”
“Ah, yes, Madam!”
It struck Cindy as odd that the Madam, who usually spent the afternoon with the young master, was handing him off so soon after finishing the portrait.
Escalion, emerging a moment later, chuckled softly at the scene.
“Bella, what’s going on?”
Belladonna couldn’t bring herself to answer and looked away.
You told me to go to the bedroom earlier…
So, leaving Peleus with Cindy was the right decision.
Escalion approached her, a teasing glint in his eyes.
“Hmm? Why did you suddenly leave Peleus? You usually keep him with you all afternoon unless something urgent comes up.”
“Ah… He, he seemed sleepy. And I’m a little sleepy too.”
“You look far too bright-eyed and bushy-tailed to be sleepy.”
“Ah, no, I’m really sleepy.”
Belladonna continued to avoid his gaze as she moved away.
Escalion headed towards the bedroom, with her following, and a servant trailing behind carrying the portrait.
Belladonna glanced back at the servant and asked,
“Escalion, are you going to hang that portrait in the study?”
“The portrait?”
“Yes, I was wondering if you’re going to hang it next to the old portrait, or if you’re going to replace the old one with the new one.”
Why is he following us?
To get to the study, they should have turned at the intersection a little while ago.
Belladonna, bothered by the servant’s presence, looked up at Escalion.
“You weren’t planning to hang it in the study?”
“I was planning to hang it in the bedroom.”
Escalion blurted out.
The bedroom? Surprised by his answer, Belladonna stopped walking.
“Ah, really?”
“I was thinking of hanging it behind the table in the bedroom. That’s why I mentioned it earlier.”
You told me?
Belladonna blinked. When?
As far as she remembered, they had never discussed the portrait’s location.
She had only heard about painting a portrait with Peleus this morning…?
Escalion looked down at her and said,
“I told you to go to the bedroom because I wanted to do something.”
“Yes? That was…”
“Thinking about it, I thought it would be best to hang our family portrait in our bedroom. I wanted to hang it there as soon as it was finished.”
So that’s what he meant…?
Belladonna blinked blankly, her face flushing with embarrassment.
Wha, wha, what! Belladonna glanced at the servant and covered her cheeks with her hands.
Was I the only one with those kinds of thoughts?
She had misunderstood his words and hastily left Peleus with Cindy, but realizing that he only had thoughts about the portrait in his head made her feel incredibly foolish.
Ugh!
“Th, then…”
“Don’t you like it? Should I just hang it next to our portrait in the study?”
“Th, that’s…”
“Or how about the lobby or the reception room as soon as you enter? If we’re going to show it off to guests, that might be better.”
Escalion said with a serious expression.
Belladonna became even more flustered and lowered her head.
The thoughts that had occupied her mind while drawing the portrait so close to him seemed to vanish in an instant.
Escalion looked down at her quietly, a subtle smile playing on his lips.
Finally, Belladonna, arriving at the bedroom with heavy steps, as if weighed down, said to Escalion,
“Hang the portrait wherever Escalion wants…”
“Really? Can I really do whatever I want?”
Belladonna nodded.
Whether it was the bedroom or anywhere else, she just wanted to get it over with.
“Then, I’ll go see Peleus now.”
And just run away! She couldn’t bear to be with him any longer, feeling so mortified.
The child’s excuse was always the easiest in situations like these…
“I’m worried about leaving him with Cindy so suddenly…”
As she was about to turn back, using Peleus as her reason to escape, Escalion grabbed her wrist.
Belladonna, surprised, looked up at him with a puzzled expression.
“Hang the new portrait next to the old portrait in the study.”
He said, looking back at the servant.
“Yes, I understand.”
The servant, who had been following them, bowed and turned around without hesitation.
Huh? Belladonna stared blankly at his retreating figure. Why is he going back…?
“Bella, I’m sorry. I lied.”
“Yes?”
“What I said about wanting to do it in the bedroom, you were right.”
Escalion gently took her chin, turning her face towards him. His playful golden eyes were visible right in front of her.
“Are you teasing me right now?”
Belladonna asked, dumbfounded.
Seeing him nod as if he had been waiting for the opportunity, she was even more bewildered.
Huh…?
“Thanks to that, you left Peleus behind.”
Escalion said with a smirk. He pushed the bedroom door shut behind him, pulling her inside.
Ah, really… Making me look like the only one with a dirty mind!
Belladonna sighed helplessly and followed him into the bedroom.
Still, she was even more surprised that relief came before annoyance.
As they entered the dimly lit room, his eyes reflected the light from the window, shining intensely.
He approached Belladonna, his expression now serious.
The atmosphere changed in an instant, and Belladonna swallowed hard, placing her hand on his arm.
“Earlier…”
Escalion said in a low, husky voice. The sound washed over her like a warm wave, sending shivers down her spine.
“…I had a hard time holding back because you smelled so good sitting close to me.”
After speaking, he lifted Belladonna’s hand and kissed it.
Belladonna inhaled sharply at the deeper, more passionate kiss.
His golden eyes, still fixed on her as his lips pressed against her hand, stared intently.
The lips that had been resting on her hand gradually moved upwards.
Belladonna watched him slowly unbutton her dress.
“It’s cold.”
Belladonna said in a soft voice.
“I’ll make sure you’re not cold.”
Escalion, who had already pressed his lips to her ear, whispered in a raspy voice.
He put his hands under her thighs, lifted her up, and carried her towards the bed.
Belladonna lay down on the wide, soft bed and looked up at him as he climbed on top of her.
His chest and shoulder muscles, clearly visible even in the dim light, were coming closer.
“Bella, I’m really happy these days. So happy it’s driving me crazy.”
Escalion said, breathing heavily as he lowered his head towards her. Belladonna closed her eyes tightly and grabbed his hair as his hot breath touched her body.
An overwhelming sensation washed over her.
“Are you?”
Lost in the moment, Belladonna couldn’t answer and only let out ragged breaths.
“You have to answer.”
Escalion mumbled, pressing his lips against her body.
He put his hands under Belladonna’s waist and squeezed hard. She squirmed, ticklish, and opened her mouth.
“Ugh, m, me too…”
“Ah, I love hearing your voice.”
Escalion said with a satisfied tone and pressed his body even closer. Belladonna made small noises and moved beneath him.
Before long, the couple’s bedroom became so hot that she completely forgot about the cold.
* * *
Belladonna opened her eyes at the ticklish sensation of someone stroking her hair.
She saw Escalion’s relaxed face as he lay there, his upper body bare, looking at her.
“Aren’t you cold?”
Belladonna asked with a smile.
Escalion kissed her forehead softly and replied,
“How could my body get cold when you’re next to me?”
Of course, it wouldn’t…
Belladonna shook her head with a helpless smile. Escalion pulled her into his arms and hugged her tightly.
“Bella, you might not have liked it at first, but I’m glad I met you in Astanya.”
He said quietly. Belladonna listened to his gentle voice as she lay in his arms.
“The faint singing in my memories, the somewhat clumsy saintess, you constantly rolling your eyes when you came to Gribalta, I liked it all.”
“…”
“Thanks to you, I felt like my colorless world was being painted with all sorts of colors. The voice I could barely hear felt like it was saving me to some extent.”
“Escalion… I felt the same way.”
He clearly didn’t know that he was the one who had saved her from despair.
Belladonna reached out and hugged his broad back. Through their touching chests, she could feel their two hearts beating in the same rhythm.
“Promise me you’ll stay by my side forever.”
“I promise.”
Belladonna rubbed her forehead against his neck and replied. Escalion sighed contentedly and stroked her back.
The happiness that filled her to the brim warmed her from the inside out.
Belladonna giggled and lifted herself slightly, giving small kisses to his sharp chin several times.
She heard Escalion make a sound like air escaping.
Beyond his body, she could see the snow that had already started falling outside the window, gradually accumulating.
The snow that had piled up white on the trees was repeatedly blown away by a sudden cold wind.
Belladonna, who had been quietly watching the scene, lay back down in his arms without a hint of worry.
“It’s snowing.”
“I can hear it. Winter has come again. It’s going to be very cold this year too.”
Escalion hugged her even tighter and pulled up the blanket. Under the blanket, their legs naturally intertwined.
“No. I don’t think it will be cold.”
Belladonna said softly.
She was no longer afraid of the harsh season and cold of Gribalta that had returned.
The Gribalta Castle, being by her husband’s side, and the life she shared with her child would continue to be warm.
“Please keep me warm forever, Escalion.”
“Of course.”
Escalion stroked the back of her head and said. Belladonna felt the soft touch and gradually drifted off to sleep.
The languid feeling gradually spread.
The couple’s bedroom, filled with happiness, continued to be filled with warmth.
