“They will be coming to find us now.”
Park Do-joon said, getting back into the car to wait. Less than twenty minutes later, men armed with rifles cautiously approached, surveying the area.
“Who are you!”
“We’re from the Korean Embassy.”
“Korean Embassy?”
“Yes. We’re here to rescue the Korean citizens held by the Karen rebels.”
They frowned at that.
“We haven’t captured any Korean bastards.”
“We know. They’re being held by another warlord, and we’ve come to ask you to act as a bridge.”
“Another warlord?”
“Yes.”
They lowered their voices and spoke among themselves.
“This is about Jawa’s gang, isn’t it?”
“Damn it. Why is the shrapnel flying here?”
They approached warily and said,
“Sorry, but those guys are from a different faction than us.”
“We know. But you exchange communications, don’t you?”
“That’s true.”
“That’s why we’re asking for help. The peace agreement with the Myanmar government has effectively broken down, hasn’t it?”
“So you came all the way here?”
“We didn’t want to push in and be suspected.”
In fact, it had been quite a while since Myanmar and the Karen had signed a peace agreement. However, not all warlords had agreed to that peace agreement. These men were from a major Karen warlord group that had agreed to the ceasefire, while the group called Jawa was a faction that had refused to cease fighting until the end.
In reality, most Karen people had stopped armed struggle after the ceasefire agreement.
‘The biggest reason those Jawa guys turned to crime must be that.’
The people who had been providing them with food and weapons cut off support after the ceasefire, and they needed money to continue their armed struggle.
In fact, the timing was perfect.
However, they re-emerged when the military junta overturned the negotiating government in Myanmar through a coup and began to massacre and oppress the Karen people again, leading them to return to battle.
“So you want us to build a bridge to them? I know you’re already negotiating, right?”
“Things aren’t going well with them. They’re asking for a billion won [approximately $750,000 USD] per person.”
“What, are they crazy?”
Everyone looked dumbfounded at that.
“And we have to stop that.”
“Just an agreement?”
“No. The Chinese army will be pushing in soon. And the Myanmar military might use them to wipe out the Karen rebels entirely.”
The rebels’ faces hardened at those words. After a moment of consideration, one person stepped forward.
“I’ll tell the higher-ups. But it will be uncomfortable on the way.”
“We know. But it’s better than stepping on an anti-tank mine.”
Park Do-joon said knowingly, and the man chuckled and went inside. He seemed to be trying to use a radio. After a while, he came back and handed over a hood.
“You have to cover your eyes to go.”
“Gladly.”
Park Do-joon nodded and took it, covering his eyes. Soon after, Park Do-joon and Yoon Tae-min were led away by the rebels, leaving only the driver to guard the car.
After being led for at least an hour, they were able to reach a fairly large village. And after the hood was removed, all they saw was the inside of a dark house.
‘Well, they wouldn’t want to show the layout of the village.’
They couldn’t know if the other party was a scout or something.
“So, you have something to say to us?”
The man in the seat of honor looked at Park Do-joon and Yoon Tae-min with wary eyes and asked.
“China may attack the Karen people soon.”
“I’ve heard that story too. But it’s not our fault.”
Not all Karen people are slaughterers who sell organs. Rather, those guys called Jawa are the crazy ones, and they are crazy warmongers who are a tiny minority within the Karen rebels.
Why else would they oppose the ceasefire agreement that everyone else agreed to and continue their armed struggle until now?
“Sorry, but we’re completely different from those guys. Those guys are truly insane.”
“I know. They’re impossible to talk to.”
‘Of course. It can’t be helped.’
The guys who refused to cease fighting and went to fight to the end when the Karen rebels and the Myanmar government made a ceasefire were just truly insane, and most of them were crazy for blood and slaughter. And the only place that accepted those guys was none other than Jawa’s gang.
“Originally, Jawa’s gang wasn’t that big.”
However, the forces grew as the guys who couldn’t give up armed struggle defected and threw themselves there.
“In fact, that kind of thing happens quite often.”
“Anyway, sorry, but we don’t do that kind of thing, no matter what those guys do.”
“I know. That’s why we came all the way here in person.”
If the Karen people were like Jawa’s gang, enjoying slaughter, torture, and murder, Park Do-joon would not have come all the way here.
“But the Myanmar coup army will see this as an opportunity, right? I know you’re protecting citizens in the Karen region now, aren’t you?”
“Hmm.”
“And the Myanmar coup army wants to prevent the worst-case scenario.”
When the Myanmar coup army first started the massacre, the Karen people tried to protect only their own Karen people. However, the Karen people were already quite assimilated into Myanmar, and in some areas, more than 50% were Karen. In that situation, protecting only the Karen people was impossible, and naturally, they came into conflict with the coup army and took the form of protecting citizens.
“The Karen people have a long history of living as rebels. If they have money, they have the power and experience to arm themselves.”
And the Myanmar coup army is extremely afraid of going to war with the people who have turned into civilian soldiers because of those Karen people.
The coup army can oppress the citizens not because they are numerous, but because they have guns and weapons.
In that situation, the Karen rebels, who can supply that, are bound to be an extremely burdensome target. In fact, the reason why the coup army doesn’t enter the Karen rebel area even though they know it is precisely that.
They don’t have enough troops to control the people, and if they provoke the Karen rebels and they start supplying weapons to the civilian soldiers, they will be wiped out in an instant.
“So, you’re saying they’ll eliminate us through China?”
“It’s not impossible. You know the rumors, don’t you?”
At those words, the atmosphere of the man who was talking and the people around him became fierce. And Yoon Tae-min unknowingly swallowed his saliva at that atmosphere. But Park Do-joon didn’t care much.
‘It’s not my fault.’
That’s because, within the Myanmar people, there is a rumor spreading that China instigated this military coup.
Of course, China is saying that they are not involved in such rumors, accurately expressing only that ‘we do not want that.’
Even South Korea, which is extremely reluctant to confront other countries and even earns the reputation of being a global pushover, is issuing statements condemning this coup in Myanmar, but China, which treats other countries as its vassals under the guise of wolf warrior diplomacy, is saying ‘we didn’t want that’ regarding the coup in Myanmar, which is bound to be strange. Furthermore, it is even more suspicious in a situation where the coup forces had frequent close meetings with China just before the coup.
‘The truth is unknowable, but.’
The important thing is that they believe that. In that situation, if they say that China is likely to help the Myanmar coup army massacre the Karen people, what will they think?
‘They don’t think it’s just a possibility.’
Being in the middle of a war and having no faith in China, they take this issue seriously.
‘Just like now.’
The men are frowning at Park Do-joon’s words.
“So, your opinion is to sell out our comrades?”
“No. I’m saying let’s find a way to survive together.”
“A way to survive together?”
“Yes, if you hand over only the criminals, we can survive.”
“How can we believe that? And we don’t betray.”
Everyone’s face became uncomfortable at the word betrayal. That’s because the act of betrayal is not viewed favorably anywhere in the world. Why else would there be a saying that a guy who has betrayed once will betray again, so don’t give him important positions?
“I know.”
No matter how messed up the organ trafficking organization is, they won’t easily accept being told to betray. Furthermore, it is even more so in a situation where it is not confirmed that China will push in.
“But retaliating against betrayal is not betrayal. It’s just self-defense.”
“Betrayed?”
“Do you think the organ trafficking organization will keep its faith and try to be with them?”
‘There’s no way.’
For the organ trafficking organization, the Karen people are just mercenaries they can use for money.
‘And they mostly think of them as a kind of expendable, not as companions who accompany them or comrades who fight together.’
Even in South Korea, officers think of soldiers as expendable and use them up, so wouldn’t the guys who only pay money to use them think of them as expendable?
‘In fact, according to the memories of the future, they were easily arrested.’
At that time, about 69 criminals were arrested. But if you think about it, there is a part that doesn’t make sense. They were arrested in Taiwan, but there was no mention of fighting with the Karen rebels.
‘There is no possibility that the Myanmar army would have deployed troops for Taiwan, and China ultimately failed to step in. But there was no engagement. The criminals were arrested and handed over nicely to Taiwan.’
That means only one possibility. The Karen people who were protecting them betrayed them.
‘Well, was it Jawa? There’s no way such a guy would have faith.’
They are crazy guys who are only obsessed with slaughter and continue the war, even abandoning the ceasefire negotiations. There’s no way the guys who just watched people die and have their organs stolen would have beliefs.
In fact, one of the things that was not well known at the time was that there were also Myanmar people among the victims. Even Karen people were included in that.
‘They didn’t even know that, but they were the guys who neglected it.’
The fact that those guys betrayed means that if we give them a suitable excuse, they will betray again.
“Not betrayal, but self-defense?”
“That’s right. Those guys are from the Chinese Triads [organized crime syndicates]. Even if those guys get out of here, will they say that the remaining Karen people are not at fault?”
“Hmm…….”
“As you know, this situation is quite serious. It’s an incident involving China, Taiwan, South Korea, and the Myanmar government.”
Originally, it was only a problem between Taiwan and the Myanmar government, but now the situation has grown several times larger than that. So, the burden on them is bound to increase.
“Certainly…….”
In fact, even if they were the same Karen people, they didn’t want to be involved with Jawa’s gang. Because they are crazy.
They picked up weapons again to fight against the Myanmar coup army, but those crazy guys are just shouting revolution and independence while avoiding engagement with the coup army and are busy committing crimes and looting ordinary people in Myanmar.
